That's a wrap on the photography for Dear Dog.

Over the past few months I've run 41 sessions for the project, and now the next stage begins, turning all of those portraits and letters into the finished book, one that celebrates the connection between dogs and the people who love them.

So far, Dear Dog has raised $2,200 for Starting Over Dog Rescue, and a portion of the proceeds from book sales will also go to the rescue.

Over the next few weeks I'll be working on the book design and choosing the final images.

There's something else coming too. In mid-September you'll get to help choose which portrait appears on the cover of Dear Dog. Which of the portraits you've seen so far would you love to see on the front of the book?

Meet Athena.

Athena came into the studio on Saturday for her adoption session, and this girl has quite a story behind her.

Athena spent her first five years left in a yard. She's with a foster family now, learning some manners and generally making up for lost time, because at five years old she still has the personality of a puppy.

One of the things I love about photographing rescue dogs is seeing the dog they've become. Whatever came before, this is who they are now, loved, safe and completely part of the family.

Athena was an absolute pleasure to photograph. What's the story behind your own rescue dog?

How often do you actually look at your favourite photos of your pet?

Your phone is probably full of them. Mine certainly is. The funny expressions, sleeping in ridiculous positions, walks, holidays and hundreds of photographs that probably mean very little to anyone else.

I love having those photographs. But choosing the ones you really love and turning them into something you can hold, display and live with does something a camera roll never will.

They become part of your home. Something you see and enjoy every day, rather than something you have to remember to scroll back and find.

That’s one of the things I love about creating finished artwork for my clients. Whether it’s a favourite portrait on the wall or a collection of images in a folio box, the photographs become something tangible.

Do you have photographs of your pets displayed at home, or are most of them still living on your phone?

Kasey says Bane is a clown who constantly makes her laugh, and it didn't take long in the studio to see why. He's a six-year-old Bull Terrier with a heart of gold.

He was a friendly boy and settled quickly once he'd sussed me out and checked out the studio. There were plenty of cuddles and kisses. He stayed close to Kasey, took direction beautifully and was a total pleasure to photograph.

Kasey told me, "Bane is my COVID dog and my shadow who has helped me through some pretty rough times." This sweet boy also acts as Kasey's daughter's unofficial "emotional therapy dog". Watching him with her, it was clear that he takes his role seriously.

"We have a special bond," Kasey said, and I think this portrait sums up that connection perfectly.

Happy International Dog Day! 🐶

I've had dogs in my life since I was a small child, and I can't imagine life without one. They've made me laugh with their zoomies and funny little quirks, taken me on countless adventures, comforted me through difficult times, and brought so much joy to my life.

I know I'm not alone in feeling that way. There's something incredibly special about the connection we share with our dogs and how much they become part of our lives.

So today, let's celebrate all the dogs we've loved, whether they're currently taking up most of the couch, demanding another walk, or one of the dogs we've loved and still miss every day.

If you've been thinking about capturing the connection you share with your own dog, I have a limited number of portrait sessions available to celebrate the opening of my new studio in September.

Foxy cross Lilly, 13, and Bullmastiff Dozer, 7, came into the studio with their family.

They were both real sweethearts. Lilly was a little nervous when she first arrived and needed a bit of extra time to settle in, while Dozer was happy to go with the flow.

According to their fur mum, Alison, when Dozer first joined the family he was quite shy. Thankfully, Lilly was there to show him the ropes, and these days they're best mates who do everything together.

Photographing two dogs with completely different personalities always keeps me on my toes. Every session is shaped by the animals in front of me, and that's one of the things I enjoy most about my job.

People often assume dogs are easier to photograph than cats. In my experience, it has less to do with which animal is easier and more to do with being willing to work at their pace.

A cat will usually let you know pretty quickly what they think of a new environment. Some settle in and start exploring straight away. Others find somewhere to hide and observe for a while, until their natural curiosity wins out and they come out to investigate.

I don't rush that part. Every session is built around the animal in front of me, and with cats that often means giving them the time and space to decide when they're ready to explore.

Those are often the moments I’m looking for. The slow blink once they’re comfortable. One ear turned towards a noise. A stretch. A look that anyone who knows that cat would recognise immediately.

Would your cat explore straight away, or watch from a safe distance first?

I have a guilty secret to confess.

I have 25 photographs of my dog Abraham around my house, and not a single one of me.

Every time I walk past one of his portraits, it makes me smile. I see his funny expressions and think how lucky I am to share my life with him. That's why I love artwork so much. It's not just there as a piece of home décor; it's there to remind us of the ones we love.

One day, when all we have left are memories, those portraits become even more precious.

Helping my clients create artwork they'll enjoy every day is one of my favourite parts of the whole experience. I hope those portraits make them smile every time they walk past them, just like mine do.
