On the banks of the mighty Murray River in Echuca.

These views feel so quintessentially Australian. They bring to mind early landscape paintings with mighty gum trees lining the banks of untamed rivers. I loved getting away, standing here in the early morning listening to the sounds of nature as the first rays of the sun hit.

As I was picking my way through country roads on a canola hunt I noticed the Campapse Weir marked on my map.

On a whim I stopped by to have a look and found this awesome stepped weir out in the middle of farmland.

I loved the geometry coupled with fast flowing water, and spent perhaps an hour shooting different compositions. My favourite is the first image in this set - distilling all the elements in the scene down to an absolute minimum.

I spent this past weekend in the rural towns of Echuca/Moama, right on the border of Victoria and New South Wales.
I was up there to shoot some landscapes for consideration by a client. I was looking for three different scenes : the curves of the Murray River lines with beautiful red gums, canola fields in full bloom, and scenes from the water at Lake Barmah.

I rented a kayak for the day from Echuca Boat & Canoe Hire and drove it up for a 5-6 hour paddle on the lake itself, as well as exploring some of the gorgeous quiet side creeks.
The lake itself was quite high, with a lot of water released upstream, and parts of the national park flooded. This worked out so well for me as I could access far more of the lake and get into some of the creeks. Having the opportunity to shoot from the water gives such a different perspective to shooting from the banks, and meant I could go so much further. The water was so still that I could capture absolutely gorgeous reflections of the trees in some of the quiet creeks.

It was my first time paddling around by myself, and I was so looking forward to it. I didn’t quite know what to expect, and while I didn’t necessarily capture the images that were in my head, I’m really happy with the images I made.

Who could resist tearing down country side roads with these stunning carpets of yellow canola fields?

I may have caked the bottom of my car with thick mud (phew didn’t get bogged), I may have turned a 2.5 hour trip into 5, but honestly who could resist this?

This past weekend I got to go to band camp with my band Melbourne Rainbow Band! 45 of us stayed at Y Discovery Camps and had a wonderful weekend working on music for our October show and getting some social time in.

On the way up I took some time to photograph the Maroondah Dam, which I’ll definitely come back to one day! Each morning before breakfast on the camp I hiked along the nature trails around the camp with my cam, just shooting whatever took my fancy. Nice and slow in nature.

Getting out of the chaos of Hanoi, Arthur Soetedja and I spent an afternoon and morning exploring the gorgeous countryside around Tam Coc in Ninh Binh.

I loved cycling along the quiet country lanes at sunrise, taking in these views with no one else around (apart from the ducks 🦆).

That evening we climbed to the top of Hang Mua and were caught in a brief thunderstorm. Minutes later, the crowds had disappeared and we had the summit almost entirely to ourselves. ⛰️🐲

I can’t wait to get home and see these images on a big screen. 🥰
