The Local Business Awards - Recognising and celebrating the best in Local Businesses

02/06/2026

A little behind-the-scenes look at what a location shoot really feels like.

Photography is so much more than pressing a shutter. It's finding the light, working with the environment, adjusting on the fly, building connection, and creating space for people to feel comfortable in front of the camera.

This footage was captured while I was shooting in Paris, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. While the final images often look effortless, there's so much happening behind the scenes to bring them to life.

Whether I'm photographing in Paris, Ireland, or here at home in Australia, my approach is always the same: creating authentic, beautiful portraits that tell a story.

I love sharing these little glimpses into the process because photography isn't just about the finished image - it's about the experience, the moments, and the memories created along the way.

Have you ever wondered what goes on during a professional photoshoot?

Thoughts for the day - You're going to look back on this season and feel it in your chest. Not because everything was perfect. Not because the kids were easy or the days were long enough. But because this was the version of your family that existed right now, and it mattered more than it felt like it did at the time. That's why I do this. Not to create something polished. To create something true.

Here's something I've noticed in nearly every session: the best photos don't happen in the planned moments. They happen when a kid says something that makes a parent laugh mid-sentence. When someone stops trying to stand correctly and just... stands. When the pressure lifts and the real stuff comes through. Posing only works when people feel comfortable. When they don't, it shows. So before I direct anything, I just slow down, chat, and let the family find their footing in the space whether thats in studio or on location. That shift - from tense to settled - is one of my favourite parts of this work. And it's where the images worth keeping tend to come from.

If you've been sitting on the idea of a family session and you are worried how everyone will be, how will we pose?, I'd love to hear from you.

A little update on The With Grace Project 💛

First, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who applied. The response has been incredibly moving, and I’m so grateful for the time, trust and openness each family has shown in sharing their stories.

I also want to thank you for your patience while I’ve been recovering from surgery. It has meant a lot to be able to take the time I needed to heal, so I can return to this project with the energy and care it deserves.

Tomorrow, I’ll be in touch with all applicants with the next steps and updates.

Thank you again for being part of this journey with me 🤍

Have you entered my Mother’s Day giveaway?

Winner will be announced tomorrow.

After five months away from the business (still here but not really shooting) while I focused on my health, I’m really looking forward to stepping back behind the camera in the next couple of weeks.

It’s been a significant time personally - I had a tumour removed and a pacemaker inserted (can finally say I'm battery operated!), and I’m so grateful to be on the other side of it and slowly getting back to doing what I love.

This year I made the decision not to run Mother’s Day mini sessions for the first time in a long time. That didn’t feel easy, but it felt right for where I was at.

Still, I didn’t want the moment to pass without acknowledging the mums in our lives; the quiet strength, the endless juggling, the love that often goes unseen.

So I’d love to give something back.

💛 Mother’s Day Giveaway 💛
I’m gifting one lucky mum an hour-long on-location portrait session at Redhead Beach or an hour in the studio (valued at $550). Date to be confirmed.

To enter:
✨ Tag a mum you think deserves this little bit of magic
✨ Each tag = one entry
✨ Feel free to share this post

The winner will be selected Sunday evening.

Thank you, as always, for the patience, kindness, and support over the past few months. I can’t wait to be back behind the lens again very soon.

9 years ago this week, I borrowed a studio and had my first shoot with strobe lighting, lit by myself!

It's wild to step back and see the growth in my work.
