The past week or so has been the scariest I’ve had with David. 😩 He became unwell and was rushed to the vet on Friday 31 July. He was really wobbly, unable to walk in a straight line, with a head tilt, turning in circles, and his pupils were different sizes.
He was given medication to help him over the weekend, then went back to the vet on Monday for X-rays. There was no improvement, so he was rushed in for a CT scan at a different vet. The results showed a large mass of fluid in his inner ear, which had caused vestibular disease, and it was pressing on his nerves, leading to facial paralysis on one half of his face. He couldn’t shut the eyelid on one of his eyes.
He was taken into emergency surgery to drain the fluid from his ear. He came home but became really lethargic and stopped eating or drinking, so we rushed him back to the vet on Wednesday. He went straight into immediate care, on a drip and lots of different medications to help him fight it. He also had brain inflammation and was unable to stand, and was really not doing well.
But he is a strong, brave boy and by Friday, I was able to visit him...he recognised me straight away and meowed. 😭 I got to hold him for a while and there were lots of cuddles. I’ve never been so happy to hear him purr.
After a week in the amazing care of the team at Mid Coast Vet in Macksville, he was finally able to come home on Sunday. He can now eat and drink on his own, stand, and go to the toilet by himself. He’s still a little wobbly on his paws and needs ongoing medications and eye drops every few hours, but he’s already showing massive improvements, and hopefully the wobbles and facial paralysis will get back to normal soon.
For a while there we didn’t know if he was going to be okay. Thank you to everyone at Mid Coast Vet for your incredible knowledge and care, and for not giving up on him. 🙏 I am just so grateful to have more time with this sweet, beautiful boy.
We kept saying “hope for David” the whole way through, and it worked. ❤️
P.S. The mess on his face is his recovery food, which he’s enjoying getting everywhere. 🐈
