\\ Journal Entry: Nim & Akila ✨

The day started at Nim’s place where the whole family was getting ready in true Sri Lankan fashion. Dad with the boys, the girls all crammed into the master bedroom doing their makeup and helping each other get ready. A kind of cohesive chaos but somehow so calm at the same time. Everyone doing their own thing but still doing it together. I found that so wholesome.

Something I loved about this wedding was how nobody seemed to be too worried about the time. The whole day just had this lovely ease to it. Even during the ceremony, Nim and Akila were giggling, exchanging little words and chatting with their guests between vows. It was far from a performance. Just two people being themselves, surrounded by people they love.

And after the whole wedding, we somehow ended up at the beach just to chill. There wasn’t even a plan to take photos but we ended up taking a few anyway, and I’m so glad we did.

I think one of my favourite things about photographing weddings is getting to notice all the little things happening around the big moments. The expressions, the little exchanges, things that the couple themselves probably didn’t even realise were happening because they were so busy living through it all.

// fun fact! tamil is my second language, but a lot of these words felt familiar to me before I could really explain them.

Anbu is one of those.

In English, we get love, affection, care, but none of that quite holds how it feels in Tamil.

For me, it’s quieter.
It shows up in habit, attention, small acts of care.

I’m making this series to understand these words better myself, and to try, however imperfectly, to share that feeling in English.

I want to keep learning these words, the feelings inside them, and see what can be carried across into English.

// there was something so easy about this afternoon.

This one sits a little closer to home for me because I shot it back home in Sri Lanka. We walked around, stopped wherever the light felt nice, talked nonsense in between photographs, and they just kept falling back into each other. A hand around a waist. A laugh that interrupted whatever I was trying to photograph. That little look people give each other when they’ve forgotten there’s a camera there.

Love is simple when you watch it closely. It lives in comfort, in familiarity, in being able to be ridiculous together and still feel completely at home.

Two people, a little bit of light, and the way they naturally find their way back to each other 👩🏽‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏾

ninai means to think, remember, reflect.

I started Ninai because the photographs I’ve always cared about most aren’t necessarily the perfectly posed ones.

They’re the nervous hands before the ceremony. Someone laughing harder than they meant to. A parent watching quietly from across the room. The tiny moments happening in between everything everyone planned.

I want to photograph weddings in a way that lets you come back years later and remember not only what the day looked like, but what it felt like.

That’s ninai.

Winter can be uncertain in all the ways photographs usually notice first.
The sky, the air, the light, the way the whole day keeps shifting under you.
