The Art of Photographing Cats

Photographing cats is a rather different proposition to photographing dogs. They generally have their own views on the matter.

These two beautiful Ragdolls recently visited my Perth pet photography studio for their portraits. Creating relaxed, natural photographs of cats takes an understanding of their behaviour, plenty of patience and, perhaps most importantly, time.

My cat photography sessions are never rushed. They have time to explore, settle in and become comfortable with me, the studio and the camera. The aim is simple: beautiful, timeless portraits in which your cat actually looks like themselves — rather than slightly alarmed by or deeply suspicious of the whole experience.

Today, on Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, we remember the pets we’ve loved and lost.

Some of my most heartbreaking, but important, photo sessions are for pets who don’t have much time left. These photographs mean so much, but I often wish we’d met sooner, when their pet was well and there wasn’t the pressure of time running out.

Please don’t wait until the end to preserve the bond you share. If you’ve been thinking about booking a session, do it while your pet is happy, comfortable and simply being themselves. One day, those photographs may be among your most treasured possessions.

Today, I’m remembering the beautiful souls pictured here, and all the much-loved pets who never truly leave us as nothing breaks the bond of love. I believe we all get out of here alive.

LADY BOSS - There is something rather wonderful about a Scottish Terrier. Small in stature, enormous in character, and generally quite certain of their place in the world.

This little lady is also very clearly adored. And really, that’s what I love most about photographing pets: capturing not just how they look, but something of who they are to the people who love them.

They share our lives for far too short a time. A beautiful portrait gives us something of them to keep.

If there’s a much-loved dog or cat in your life, perhaps it’s time they had a proper portrait too.

Is this Perth’s oldest Siamese?

At 19 years young, this very distinguished gentleman has clocked up a few miles. He came to Perth from America, with a spell living in Singapore along the way, always accompanied by his mum.

And just look at him. Those extraordinary blue eyes, that beautiful face and a presence that suggests he knows perfectly well how handsome he is.

At 19, he’s not simply a much-loved pet. He’s part of a life and a story worth remembering.

So, Perth… does anyone have an older Siamese?

And if you have an old friend of your own, don’t wait for the “perfect” time to photograph them. Now is the perfect time.

Today is international Cat Day. What does that mean? Well we just celebrate cats. Cats of course are superior to all other species, esp Humans. They were once worshipped as Gods - they've not forgotten this. Hat off to each and every one of them.

I planned a couple of days off this week to focus on some time to myself. Then I got the call. Can I photograph a 4 month old puppy who needs a home. I can never stay no to animals who need my help. So, this is Stella. Yesterday, she trotted into my studio with her foster carer. I was in love!

Tiny Stella didn’t have the best start in life. She was found wandering alone on the streets of Rockingham area at just 4 weeks of age. She was a mess (see her photo when she arrived at DBBR - clearly neglected). Where was her mum? Where were her siblings? We don’t know. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

But, the good news is Stella is now thriving with a wonderful foster carer in Iluka. She is outgoing, friendly, curious and very happy indeed. I found her to be very loving and no sign of fear when I photographed her. She did as she was asked and followed basic commands. I photographed her in about 10 minutes - a sign of a well behaved and happy dog. Her breed? Most likely Staffy mix but I feel there is something French about her…

Now Stella is simply waiting for her people.

I read a quote once by the wonderful Scottish Poet, Robert Louis Stevenson. He said, "You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us". This is Archie and Roy. Stunning boys. Their light shines brightly from within. I agree with Robert.

And here they are… the final three gorgeous dogs from our fundraising day at Pet O Joondalup ! 🐾

A huge thank you to all 12 dogs and their amazing families who helped us raise $715 for Staffy and Bully Breed Rescue Inc. Your support will help give rescue dogs the care and second chances they deserve.

A special thank you also to my wonderful assistant, SallyAnne Smith, whose help throughout the day made everything run so smoothly. I couldn’t have done it without you. ❤️
