Desperately trying to make up for lost time caused by a signalling fault at Sunshine, R761 barrels through Macedon station on its way north to Castlemaine, assisted at the rear by T356 and T395.

K160 leads J549 through Walmer State Forest with an extra-long train from Castlemaine to Maldon, coinciding with the first day of the spring school holidays.

As the D1/D2/D3 classes of the early 1900s neared their end of life, the response of the Victorian Railways was to look to the K class - a design rather pedestrian in nature but thoroughly reliable and dependable in operation - and see what could be modernised. The result was the J class: convertible from broad gauge to standard gauge, short enough to turn on the 50' branch line turntables, and light enough to traverse the lightly-laid branch lines of regional Victoria.

Leaving Castlemaine under the setting sun, K183 tackles the climb through Chewton assisted by T395 at the rear.

The Regional Fast Rail project of the early 2000s saw large sections of the line from Kyneton to Bendigo converted from double to single track, as the clearances of many overbridges and tunnels were too tight to facilitate 160km/h running. Eureka Street in Chewton is one example where the trackbed has been re-aligned, centring it under the structure.

Restarting its journey home after waiting on the Bacchus Marsh side of the bridge to allow regular V/Line scheduled services to pass,
R761's whistle echoes across the Werribee River as it crosses Melton Reservoir at a rather sedate pace, returning to Melbourne with a Eureka Express tour to Ballarat.
