I love finding this photo in my archives. Every time I go hunt for something on an old hard drive I find it. It reminds me of a time before social media or decent smartphones when a camera or a book was the only thing to keep you amused. This is back in 2008 when we had landed the Cessna 177 to wait for the clouds to pass. In a time before drones when the aerial view was rare and fascinating. I'd spend 8 hours per day in this plane working our way up the East Coast shooting everything for anyone who needed aerial photography. Navigating through busy airspace like Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, then chilling under the wing on a country airstrip.

I was talking to someone recently about the mine fire in Hazelwood that took place in February 2014 and it prompted me to investigate my archives and revisit the images I took for a client. The client was fairly concerned about this fire, and I was instructed to go down there every day for 6 days. I used a Cessna 180 aircraft and a pilot from Essendon airport and each day we went down there to document the fire. It was hectic with helicopter water bombers working below us and we were to keep our altitude at a level that didn’t hinder the helicopters. As I was working on this project, I was doing my own research and found information about the Jharia coal fire in India that had been burning since 1916 and then I realised this is why this is such a big deal. It may burn forever. The fire was eventually extinguished, marking the beginning of the end for the Hazelwood Power Station in Victoria.
