Sorry about another roadkill post, and I hope I don't turn you off, but I do find roadkill interesting because it can reveal fascinating species distribution, like I discovered today!

I found a striped possum in the middle of Mareeba!

If someone asked me, "Do striped possums reside as far west as Mareeba?" I would have said no way! Well, today that has changed.

A couple of weeks ago, I also spotted a dead northern quoll in the middle of Mareeba.

It'd be nice to think there is a good resurgence of northern quolls throughout northern Australia after the impacts of cane toads and forest fragmentation.

Even though the weather was forecast to turn gloomy, Paul and I still decided to explore the western boundary of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and just returned yesterday.

Some really wild country with wilderness 360 degrees around as far as the eye can see.

I got quite emotional knowing this could have been all very different if the 94 wind towers had gone ahead right through the guts of it a couple of years ago. Thank you to all the farsighted campaigners out there who saved this incredible wilderness from the proposed Chalumbin Wind Farm and prevented it from being industrialised. It was a tough battle against multinational corporate interests, but people power was stronger. An incredible story...

I watched him walk around, breaking up fruit like this red water apple so the babies could get fed smaller portions.

Meanwhile, the juvenile in the last post is still hanging around too.

My wife booked Norfolk Island a year ago as a family trip to celebrate her sister's birthday. Returned late last week, and it was epic. I couldn't help slipping out early each morning to see what the light would do along the island's beautiful coastlines and scenic interior.

I thought I knew the basic history of the Island, but I was way off in many respects. A truly fascinating place with a history that is extraordinary. Thoroughly loved it!

Returned from another excellent exploration within Mt. Lewis National Park and walked up a peak that Dominic Chaplin, Paul Curtis and I have been considering for some time.

Some good spotlighting at night, walking through the day and birthday cheer for Paul.

It was an honour to help Dr Timothy Bottoms reach the final publication stage of his highly anticipated and very important latest work - Bama Bulmba - Far North Queensland History Series.

These are incredibly important books for our understanding of local north Queensland cultural history.

Tim passed away just as the books were being printed. It is with great privilege to announce that his final life's work is now available at bookshops in North Queensland:

- Cairns Books (Cairns Central)
- Whileaway Bookshop & Cafe (Port Douglas)
- Kuranda Visitor Information Centre (Kuranda)

We plan to get the books out into national distribution and into schools.
