A great little moment yesterday while walking down the driveway, providing instant cheer. Captured this on my phone: a magnificent male Rifle Bird.

My wife booked Norfolk Island a year ago as a family trip to celebrate her sister's birthday. Returned late last week, and it was epic. I couldn't help slipping out early each morning to see what the light would do along the island's beautiful coastlines and scenic interior.

I thought I knew the basic history of the Island, but I was way off in many respects. A truly fascinating place with a history that is extraordinary. Thoroughly loved it!

Returned from another excellent exploration within Mt. Lewis National Park and walked up a peak that Dominic Chaplin, Paul Curtis and I have been considering for some time.

Some good spotlighting at night, walking through the day and birthday cheer for Paul.

It was an honour to help Dr Timothy Bottoms reach the final publication stage of his highly anticipated and very important latest work - Bama Bulmba - Far North Queensland History Series.

These are incredibly important books for our understanding of local north Queensland cultural history.

Tim passed away just as the books were being printed. It is with great privilege to announce that his final life's work is now available at bookshops in North Queensland:

- Cairns Books (Cairns Central)
- Whileaway Bookshop & Cafe (Port Douglas)
- Kuranda Visitor Information Centre (Kuranda)

We plan to get the books out into national distribution and into schools.

The things we see in the yard! Thank you, Catherine, for stumbling upon this incredible Amethystine python out front. It obviously has a full belly.

There is a big chunk of forest west of Mackay called Crediton State Forest. It was while we were on our way to this that we passed through some drier country on the western slopes. We stopped for lunch on a fresh, clear stream to discover this amazing tree just downstream.

These roots are from the same tree that have worn, died, and regrown over a very long time within a dynamic, seasonally flooding watercourse.

I've included photos of the whole tree in the comments.

PS I've taken this photo with a drone looking down.

Working on the roof today, and old girl Gertie walks past.

Merlin, we assume, is sitting on eggs.

Merlin's and Gertie's two sub-adults are now independent and wander through, acting as big grown-ups.

A little place, well, actually, geographically, a big place, Torrington State Conservation Area in northern New South Wales.

Paul and I were scrambling for ideas about where to camp for the night south of Girraween to escape the impending heavy rain forecast for the coastal ranges.

We didn't escape the rain, and it was the soggiest night of our trip. However, it is during adverse weather that the best conditions for photography arise. I really didn't catch the award-winning photo, but nevertheless it was fun being there in wet and hard conditions where the country reveals a different side to her.

It was 25 years ago that I spent some time in the Main Range National Park in south Queensland. Back in those days, I was shooting film, so I was very cautious with every shot and don't actually have too many photos.

Went back there recently for two days, but the weather conditions were very different this time round. Constant fog and misty rain hampered our views from the 1,000m high escarpments, but I was able to indulge in beautiful wet forests.
