Ahhh, the glamorous life of a photographer. 😂

People see the lovely finished photos, but there's a fair bit of carrying gear around, fiddling with lighting and rummaging through camera bags that happens before we get anywhere near those.

I've been doing this for nearly 15 years and I swear I still spend half my life looking for something I literally just put down.

But I do love it.

Even the slightly chaotic bits, because half the fun is figuring things out as you go.

And if I look like I know exactly what I'm doing while I'm doing all of this, well, that's nearly 15 years of practice for you. 😂

Well, this wasn’t exactly on the schedule. 🤧

Turns out, running two businesses, managing a household of five and having a to-do list longer than my arm doesn’t make you immune to being absolutely knocked for six.

Influenza B has well and truly taken me out.

And while my body has decided we’re doing absolutely nothing, my brain hasn’t quite received the memo.

There’s editing to finish, emails to answer, clients to look after, children to organise, a household to keep functioning and approximately 473 other things competing for space in my head.

So here I am, surviving on bone broth, honey and lemon, cold and flu tablets, and a pelvic floor that’s been shot to s**t from the coughing and sneezing and the wildly optimistic belief that I’ll wake up tomorrow feeling like a functioning human again.

The irony of being self-employed is that you work so hard for the freedom to make your own schedule, only to discover you’re the world’s worst boss when it comes to giving yourself sick leave.

If you’re waiting on something from me, I promise I haven’t forgotten you. I’m just temporarily operating at the speed of a sedated sloth.

Now, if someone could explain to my brain that resting is actually productive, that would be fabulous.

Anyone else absolutely terrible at being sick?

And look, I get it. ...Standing in front of a camera can feel bloody awkward, especially when someone tells you to act natural and suddenly you've forgotten how to stand like a normal human being.

But that's where I come in.

We chat, we have a laugh, I give you a bit of direction when you need it and occasionally make a complete silly bu**er of myself to get a genuine smile.

And before you know it, we're getting the photos you were convinced you'd never be comfortable enough to take.

After nearly 15 years doing this, I reckon making people feel comfortable is one of the most important skills I've learnt.

Because I want you to look back at your photos and recognise yourself in them.

So if you've been putting off booking a photoshoot because you hate being in front of the camera, come and have a chat with me.

I promise I'm much less scary than the camera. 😂

Any excuse to share more photos of this incredible woman, really. 😂🤍

I had the pleasure of photographing the lovely Jess back in July for her branding shoot, and I absolutely loved how these turned out.

But I'm bringing them back out today for a very good reason...

It's her BIRTHDAY WEEK! 🥳

And I reckon that's as good an excuse as any to give her a little extra love on here.

Jess, I hope you have the most wonderful birthday week, get thoroughly spoilt and manage to put your feet up for five minutes. 😂

When your son comes to help in the studio and immediately starts questioning your equipment choices. 😂

Apparently my lighting umbrella is unnecessarily enormous.

I prefer to think of it as being VERY well prepared.

And yes, I absolutely appreciate the help... even with the running commentary.

I spent nearly 15 years photographing in other people's spaces... so when I finally got to create my own, I was going to be a little bit fussy. 😂

I knew exactly what I wanted. And probably even more importantly, what I didn't want.

No big, impersonal studio that feels like you've walked into a warehouse.

I wanted somewhere with beautiful natural light (obviously, I'm a photographer), a bit of character, and that lovely feeling of being able to walk in, make yourself comfortable and get creative.

Somewhere you could have the whole space to yourself, without distractions or people wandering through.

So that's what I've spent the better part of a year creating.

And the lovely thing is, you don't have to book me as your photographer to use it.

Bring your own photographer, your business, your products or whatever creative idea you've been sitting on.

Still putting off your business photos because you hate having your photo taken? Oh, we need to talk. 😂

I reckon I've heard just about every excuse in nearly 15 years of photography.

And I get it. Most people don't exactly jump out of bed excited to stand in front of a camera.

But you don't have to know what you're doing. That's my job.

What I DO want you to think about is what your business needs from the shoot.

Where are the photos going? What do you want people to know about your business? What does your everyday work actually look like?

We'll figure the rest out together.

And I promise there'll be plenty of laughs along the way. I'm usually the one making a complete idiot of myself to get them. 😂

Sometimes my photos end up in places I never expected when I took them.

This month I’ve had photographs pop up alongside two pretty bloody incredible women sharing their stories.

Steph Schmidt’s portraits are featured in Graziher, alongside her incredibly honest piece about postnatal depression and mental health for rural women.

Calling all Barossa wedding planners, event coordinators and travel specialists... I’ve got one for you. 👀

If you have clients looking for somewhere genuinely private and a little bit special to propose in the Barossa, I’d love you to know about my sunset sessions.

I’m lucky enough to have access to a beautiful private location, away from the usual tourist spots, crowds and people wandering past at exactly the wrong moment. 😂

Think golden Barossa light, gorgeous views and plenty of space for someone to nervously get down on one knee without an audience.

I can also help those slightly panicked grooms-to-be who know they want to make it special but have absolutely no idea how to pull it off.

We can organise the timing and location so all they really need to worry about is bringing the ring and remembering what they wanted to say.

And because I’m already there with my camera, the whole thing is captured as it actually happens.

Want to know what I hate most about the photography industry?

The backstabbing.

I’ve never really understood it.

There’s enough work out there for all of us. There are photographers I happily recommend because their style suits a job better than mine. There are photographers I admire, learn from and genuinely want to see do well.

Someone else being bloody brilliant at what they do doesn’t take anything away from me.

Nearly 15 years in this industry and I still think we’d all be better off spending less time worrying about what the photographer down the road is doing and more time getting really bloody good at our own thing.

I’ll cheer for you.

And then I’ll get back to my own work. 😂
