Fourteen years behind the camera teaches you a few things.

Trends come and go.

One minute everyone wants perfectly posed, colour-coordinated family photos. The next it's all about candid moments and windswept hair.

Editing styles change.

Cameras get better.

Every photographer seems to have a newborn phase somewhere along the way (trust me... it's not for the faint-hearted 😅).

And I reckon every photographer eventually starts dreaming about opening a studio.

After 14 years, I finally did.

But here's what I've learnt never changes.

People don't remember what camera you used.

They remember how you made them feel.

The families who left saying, "That was actually fun."

The business owner who walked away feeling confident again.

The dad who didn't really want family photos but ended up laughing the whole way through.

The real work has never been the hour behind the camera.

It's the planning beforehand.
It's making people feel comfortable.
It's knowing when to quietly step back and let a moment unfold.
And then it's sitting down afterwards, carefully choosing and editing the images that tell the story best.

Because photography has never really been about photographs.

It's always been about people.

And after 14 years...

I still think that's the best part of the job.

People often congratulate me on Studio Abel.

But the truth is, this dream has never just belonged to me.

My husband has put in more hours than anyone will ever know. My kids have been patient through the late nights, the weekends, and all the moments when Mum was "just finishing one more thing."

They've all sacrificed pieces of their time so this little dream could become real.

Studio Abel might have my name on it, but it was built with a whole lot of love, encouragement and support from the people standing quietly behind me.

I don't think they'll ever truly know how grateful I am.

🤍

If you're looking for Father's Day specials...

I'm probably going to disappoint you.

I don't run Father's Day mini sessions or limited-time promotions.

But I do believe there's one gift that's worth giving every single time.

Photographs.
Not because they're trendy.
Because they become more valuable with every passing year.

Long after the socks have holes in them.
The "World's Best Dad" mug has chipped.
And the BBQ gadgets have found their way to the back of the shed...

Those photos will still be there.

Little hands wrapped around Dad's neck.
The way your daughter still reaches for his hand without thinking.
The belly laughs.
The cuddles.

The smile that crinkles at the corners of his eyes when he's looking at the people he loves most.

Those are the things you'll want to remember.

One day, those little hands won't be so little anymore.

And that's why I believe photographs will always be one of the most meaningful gifts you can give.

Not for Father's Day.

For life.

Headshots have somehow earned a reputation for being awkward.

You know... standing there wondering what to do with your hands, forcing a smile that feels about as natural as a passport photo. 😂

I promise, that's not how I do things.

We'll have a chat, probably a laugh, I'll tell you where to stand, what to do with those hands everyone worries about, and before you know it, you'll forget the camera is even there.

You don't need to know how to pose.
You don't need to practise in the mirror.
You definitely don't need to apologise for being "awkward."

That's my job.

Your job is simply to turn up as yourself.

The best headshots have never been about perfect poses.

They're about capturing the person behind the business.

Can I photograph products on a white background?

Yep.

I've got the lights.
I've got the backdrops.
I've got all the gear.

But honestly?

It just doesn't make my heart sing.

For me, products deserve more than sitting in a white box.

I want to photograph them where they're actually meant to be. In little hands building towers. On a coffee table waiting for someone to pick them up. In a home. At a picnic. In a workspace. Being used. Being loved.

Because that's how your customers imagine them.

That's where personality lives.

That's where story lives.

If you're after perfectly cut-out catalogue images, I'll happily recommend some incredibly talented product photographers who specialise in that. Collaboration is always better than pretending to be everything to everyone.

But if you want your products to feel warm, real and full of life...

That's where you'll find me.

Because I'm not just photographing what you sell.

I'm photographing the story people want to be part of.

One of the things nobody tells you about building a studio is how emotionally attached you become to paint colours.

I genuinely thought the floor was going to be one of the easiest parts of this whole project.

Clean it.
Prep it.
Paint it.

Done.

Instead, I painted the entire thing, stood back feeling incredibly proud of myself, and then watched the Barossa sunshine reveal that I had made a terrible mistake.

Cue the panic.

The girls received approximately one million comparison photos.

I consulted ChatGPT.

I stared at the floor for an unhealthy amount of time.

There may have been tears.

There was definitely swearing.

Then I did what most small business owners eventually learn to do.

I bought more paint and started again.

Because behind every beautiful finished space is usually a woman who has questioned every decision she's made at least three times.

And if you've ever built, renovated, created or launched something of your own...

I'm guessing you've had your own paint-colour moment too. 🤍

Where the magic happens 🤍

For a long time, this space existed only in my head.

A place filled with beautiful light.
A place that felt calm.
A place where people could slow down, take a breath, and focus on creating something meaningful.

Now, every time I walk through these doors, I still have to pinch myself a little.

Studio Abel sits quietly amongst the vines and gum trees of the Barossa, designed to feel warm, welcoming and inspiring from the moment you arrive.

It's where brands come to tell their stories.
Where ideas come to life.
Where businesses find the confidence to show up.
And where some pretty special magic gets made along the way.

Whether you're creating content, updating your brand imagery, launching something new or simply need a beautiful space to work, this little studio was built with you in mind.

And honestly?

I can't wait to see the stories that unfold here next.

One of the questions I've been asked recently is why I've been so quiet about the studio while it was all happening.

The truth is, I wasn't keeping it secret on purpose.

I was just in it.

Building something from scratch has a way of consuming every spare moment, every spare dollar and more mental energy than you could ever plan for.

There were plenty of moments where I questioned whether it would all be worth it. Plenty of moments where the finish line felt a very long way away.

But here we are.

And while the studio is finally becoming something people can see, the journey behind it will always be the part I'm most proud of. 🤍

"Can I ask a favour?"

Running a small business can feel a little vulnerable.
Launching a new one feels downright terrifying eekkk

Because after all the planning, renovating, dreaming and hard work, there comes a point where you have to open the doors and hope people walk in.

So today I'm asking a favour.

If you've ever enjoyed my work...
If I've photographed your family...
If we've worked together...
If you've followed along quietly from the sidelines...

Would you help me spread the word? Studio Abel Barossa
