I've finished an amazing trip to Longreach by visiting my Grandparents grave and the Railway Station where my Uncle's worked. One Uncle worked for 49 years and 6 months at Longreach Railway. I've seen the Hospital where my Mum and my cousins were born (finished in 1943 by American soldiers)
I've crossed the Tompson River, so I'll definitely be back. (Wives tale, if you cross the river, you'll be back in less than 7 years 😆 🤣)

For this trip to Longreach, it's been great to step off the tourist trail, walk the streets and chat to the locals, including playing Bingo! We've heard a number of stories about neighbourhood living in this small outback community. I walked into the Chemist where Mum worked (Speirs Pharmacy) and saw the church where Mum and Dad married in 1967. And visited my Mum's old family home (last few photos) which is approximately 100 years old.

This is adventure week where I'm heading to Longreach in central west Queensland where my Mum was born in 1944. The recent rains have created a vibrant green outback. Petrol issues have kept tourism numbers very low. Longreach was declared a town in 1887. It's famous for the birth place of Qantas and the Stockmans Hall of Fame and in 2021 the population was about 3500 people.

It's an incredible sight watching our freshwater eels gather at the Hopkins River mouth at exactly the same time, every year. The eels are on their epic journey of about 3000 Kilometres to the Coral Sea. They will mate and die and babies will return to our waterways.

Lighthouses come in all shapes and sizes. With the prevalence of electricity you can see their shape change from the traditional tall structure to a small size like the one at Vivonne Bay, Kangaroo Island (2nd pic). The last one is actually an obelisk that's situated in Robe.

The "Remarkables" on Kangaroo Island are mind blowing and baffles people how nature created these sculptures on top of a huge rock platform. They're at the furtherest end of the Island and well catered for regarding easy access. Put it on your bucket list.

A highlight of our Kangaroo Island trip was a visit to the historic Weirs Cove in the south west corner of the Island, not far from the Remarkables. This area was used from 1907 to the 1930s to lift people and supplies from the boats to the Lighthouse area. An amazing feature in the day to be winched by a flying fox contraption. Not for the faint hearted. These people were true pioneers amongst nature's burly elements.

There's so much variety in the natural attractions on Kangaroo Island. It's definitely a "gentle tourism" spot. Life is slower, the country is recovering after the bushfire 6 years ago and we've seen a range of wildlife.

February and March usually deliver beautiful days to Warrnambool. The sky is generally blue, winds are low and the ocean glistens with the limestone hue. With minimal tourism on the week days, exploration close to home is easy.
