Happy Halloween!

Halloween is celebrated every October 31 and traces its origins to the ancient Celtic festival Samhain, later blended with Christian traditions such as All Hallows’ Eve. It features customs like trick‑or‑treating, jack‑o’-lanterns carved from pumpkins (originally turnips), costumes, and folklore involving witches, spirits, and black cats.

Its roots lie in the Gaelic festival Samhain, when Celts believed the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin.

The term “Halloween” is a shortened form of All Hallows’ Eve and first appeared in Christian writings around 1745.

Irish and Scottish immigrants brought many Halloween traditions to the United States in the 19th century.

But what about here in Australia?

Halloween in Australia blends global traditions with uniquely local twists, from warm springtime trick‑or‑treating to daylight celebrations and creative Aussie adaptations.

Halloween has been celebrated in Australia for over 150 years, with the first recorded celebration in 1858 in Castlemaine, Victoria

Although many assume it’s an American import, its roots trace back to Irish and Scottish traditions brought to the U.S. in the 1840s and earlier Celtic festival customs.
