I’ve been making stencil art for nearly a looooong time now, which is apparently enough to develop some fairly unnecessary opinions about cutting holes in paper and spraying paint through them.

So here they are.

Seven hills I’m willing to die on as a stencil artist.

Some are probably obvious. Some might annoy other stencil artists. One or two I’ll probably change my mind about eventually and pretend I never posted this.

That’s art, baby!

If you like stencil art, questionable opinions and watching a middle-aged dad spend far too long cutting tiny bits of paper, follow along.

Never fully ready but going for the best version anyway, because waiting for perfect conditions is just another way of avoiding the work.

Every layer I’m chasing the detail that MOST people won’t even notice, the extra hour on a line that could’ve been “good enough” twenty minutes ago, the standard I hold myself to even when nobody’s watching and there’s an easier way through. That’s the bit nobody sees on the reel.
It’s not glamorous, it’s a lot of repetition and not wanting to let something be done half finished, and to be honest some days it does feel like I take the LONG way round.
But sharp doesn’t happen by accident.
It’s earned one layer at a time.

I hadn’t listed these in my shop because I was holding on to some idea about making content about them, but a DM changed my mind.

At the start of the year I’d wanted to try and make 30 paintings in 30 days - a 30 in 30 series. I had grand plans to shoot every day, record the process and make a series.
I made it to day 3 and it all fell over because the goal was crazy (I see that now). But what I did get out of it was a boost in my creative thinking, and a consistency I’ve kept going. The goal isn’t 30 in 30 anymore it’s just keep creating.

I’ll talk about failing that goal soon but for now it’s all about having an idea and seeing it through.

And a reminder that if you see art on someone’s page and like it, shoot through a DM because it’s likely available and the artist just hasn’t got around to posting that!!

Thank you to the buyer, a new collector!
These are off to Kentucky, USA! 🇺🇸

I spent a long time believing all of the above. And then one day I realised I couldn’t wait any more, and if I wanted to get more out of my art I needed to go all in.

Working in sport TV means you learn a lot about pressure, deadlines, and showing up when it’s hard. None of that stops you from starting something new, it just means you’ve already done the hard part once.

Follow along to see where this goes.

And don’t forget to interact with this post! Every share, comment or save pushes it out even further.

I’m sorry.

I hate to say this but you’ve missed out on the first edition! (except those lucky few!!!)

Post goes out this week to everyone who signed up. But you have a chance to get number 2.

I’m taking suggestions on where I should paint next so drop your favourite local spots in the comments!

If you’d like to get your hands on the next release the link is in my bio.

If you weren’t already aware, I’ve launched a print club!
Every month I’ll send out a new postcard sized print to subscribers.

I’m not trying to build an audience that just scrolls past. I want people who actually stick around: who tag a mate that needs to see a piece, who slide into my DMs about a commission for their place, who grab a spot in Quick Cuts Print Club so something new turns up in their mailbox every month.

If any of that sounds like you, follow along, and don’t be shy sharing this with someone who needs the nudge. Every share or save pushes it further.

I’ve had a busy week painting.

This one is part of a creative sprint where I’m building consistency in my work, I had tried to create a new piece every day for 30 days and got to day 3 before coming unstuck. The nature of stencil art means there is a lot of prep time, which you’d think after doing it for 20 years I would have accounted for it…but no.

Anyway, here’s Thoughts and Prayers.

I’m Logan, a self-taught stencil artist in Melbourne. I spent more than 20 years freelancing on sport tv while I was cutting layers on the side, and then one day I decided I wasn’t waiting any longer to make this the real thing.
