Photox was fortunate to be invited along to photograph the media launch for The Sapphires at the Canberra Theatre Centre yesterday.

The preview was short and sweet, but even from those few songs, you could immediately hear the raw and powerful vocal talent throughout the cast.

This new production is a collaboration between the Canberra Theatre Centre and Queensland Theatre Company, bringing one of Australia's most beloved musicals back to the stage under the direction of Wesley Enoch.

Based on the true story of four Yorta Yorta women who took their music from country Australia to the front lines of Vietnam, The Sapphires is packed with heart, humour and some of the greatest soul classics ever written.

The cast features Jack Bannister (Dave Lovelace), Ruby Henaway (Cynthia McCrae), Cameron Leonard (Robby), Aurora Liddle-Christie (Kay McCrae), Garret Lyon (Jimmy), Tehya Makani (Julie McCrae), Chris Nguyen (Joe) and Taeg Twist (Gail McCrae).

Behind the scenes, the production is brought to life by writer Tony Briggs, director Wesley Enoch, musical director Nathaniel Andrew, choreographer Yolande Brown, set and costume designer Richard Roberts, lighting designer Ben Hughes, video designer Craig Wilkinson, sound designer and sound system designer Isaac Ogilvie, assistant director Chenoa Deemal, fight choreographer NJ Price, intimacy coordinator Andrea Moor, vocal coach Naomi Andrew, stage manager Yanni Dubler and assistant stage manager Lialize du Plessis.

If yesterday's performance was anything to go by, Canberra audiences are in for something pretty special.

The Sapphires runs from 30 May - 7 June 2026, with tickets available via the Canberra Theatre Centre.

Where has May gone?!

It’s been a busy few weeks since photographing The Whitlams and the Canberra Symphony Orchestra at the Canberra Theatre Centre, but I finally have a moment to share some of my favourite images from the night.

Hearing The Whitlams perform their classics with the backing of a full orchestra was something pretty special. Songs that already carried so much emotion somehow felt even bigger, more impactful and even more nostalgic with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra behind them.

From the quieter, more intimate moments through to the full energy of the crowd dancing along by the end of the night, it was one of those concerts where photos will never fully do the experience justice… but I did my best!

A fantastic night for Australian music and Canberra's live music scene, and an absolute pleasure to photograph.

It was a pleasure once again working with Carers Australia to photograph one of their events at Parliament House.

The work Carers Australia does advocating for carers right across the country is genuinely incredible, and it’s always an honour to help capture and showcase these important conversations and stories.

Definitely worth checking out the amazing work they do!

It’s been a BUSY few weeks of live music!
From 19-Twenty and Elias Alexander causing a ruckus at the National Folk Festival, to Brigadoon in Bundanoon, to Playlunch supported by Ricky Neil Jr. and Thunder Fox at the University of Canberra Refectory (UCLivex), and finally last night, The Whitlams with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra at the Canberra Theatre Centre - it's been wild!

So now that the dust has settled, it's time to start posting a few albums!

First up, Ricky Neil Jr. and his incredible band.

Pure energy from the second they hit the stage. Big vocals, disco-infused grooves, nonstop movement, and the kind of charisma that instantly pulls a crowd into the show. The sort of act that turns a venue into a party within minutes.

It was awesome seeing people flooding through the doors the moment they opened. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve seen the Refectory this full for an opening act in over 10 years
