COOLIO was one of the most memorable people I’ve ever photographed.

The day wasn’t easy - he’d just fired his manager (the guy who booked me) and walked in clearly not in the mood to shoot. So our initial meeting was frosty.

But when we started shooting, we started talking - about art, growing up in Compton, what bogans are, and his favourite music as a kid. Then he got onto his “real passion”, cooking - and something shifted.

Before long, he was like a kid, big energy, hanging upside down, climbing on furniture, throwing out wild ideas for the shot. Suddenly, the session was fun!!

Weeks later, his wife sent me a email saying how much he loved the images, and the shoot.

So, on this anniversary of his passing, I’m sharing this never-before-seen photo of the man.

Thanks for the shoot, .

Maysa has been working on something special, writing and performing her own solo theatre piece. This week we learned that she has been selected by On Stage for best performance in NSW. In “Eight Waves of War” Maysa plays a customary Solomon Island man, who is confronted by an invading Japanese army, and the lengths he will go to protect his land and people.

What an honour to introduce my music producer son to one of the nicest people in the music game . They met briefly ten years ago, but this time was special for Kaia. A bitter sweet day, with the passing of Aston Family Man Barrett - and then Julian winning a Grammy Award! Very surreal!! Thank you to John Barrett (son of Aston)who took care of us on such a difficult day..

Temuera Morrison is a legend. I shot him in 2014 on the Gold Coast - a great experience for me but also a Star Wars obsessed Kaia who was only 11 years old at the time. His conversations with Kaia about acting, culture and family (and fishing) left a lasting impact. It’s part of the reasons that Kaia is now a young actor. So, it’s fantastic to watch Book Of Boba Fett and know that Tem got that phone call from Disney! #⁣bountyhunter⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

My father-in-law passed this week. Border closures meant that my wife and kids couldn’t be with him in the end - or at his funeral. But, I thought I’d share a little about him.

Abdul (aka Big Daddy) had a fervour for fine Chinese food, tailored silk shirts (his own custom designs) and a good Cuban cigar. (He and I once cleared-out a floating Chinese nightclub with our cigar smoke - which he thought was hilarious). If you prodded him, he’d talk about his childhood, his parents and without prodding - his religious beliefs. Whatever his ideas and opinions, I always did the right thing and agreed with him at all times. 🤣 He loved his children, adored his grandkids and was a fighter till the end - not taking the usual medications in his 91 years. We’ll all miss the eating extravaganzas - at great restaurants. He expected me to meet his appetite - plate for plate. He was unbeatable in this regard. “One more dessert!” still sends a shiver down my spine. We’ll miss you.

I took this photo the night after his passing. Kaia and I lay on the grass remembering him, talking about life, purpose and the cosmos - into the wee morning hours.
