One of the awesome blue pillars that drifted through around 11pm last night - just barely visible in the timelapse. Still can't believe this was visible (to the camera at least) in Queensland!

Aerial of yesterday's storm as it approached Beaudesert which ended up producing plenty of rain through the Lockyer Valley where Brisbane's east and north largely missed out.

โšก Rare 3D Lightning! โšก

One for the 3D geeks. Cross your eyes on the left pair or relax your eyes on the right pair to see this bolt from 23rd Nov in SEQ in 3D!

Thanks to fellow storm chaser Neil Pennell for one of these photos.

Some background: normally 3D stereo images are taken with a stereo camera or computer generated. The two images in the pair both face the subject but are captured from a slightly different perspective - the difference traditionally is the same as the distance between your two eyes. If you can get one eye to look at one image and other to look at the second image (it takes some practice!) your brain perceives a perfectly convincing 3D image.

However, because of the scale of lightning, a standard 3D camera isn't likely to show much perspective difference, so consequently not much depth. The difference here and the reason this is so rare is that these two images were taken kilometres apart: one by me near Roadvale and the other by Neil at Kalbar (both north-ish of Boonah).

There were minor adjustments to the images to make it easier for 3D viewing, like making the colours similar and applying the tree line on the horizon to both images.
