This is a hard truth to tell:
Before the 12th of August 2026 I didn’t believe I deserved my own life.
Every achievement hid behind an excuse.
“I only got this because of this person”
“I only achieved this because a reel went viral”
“I wish I was half as talented as x person”
“I’ll never make it”
Every opportunity chalked up to some twist of fate. Sounds stupid when you put it like that, ignorant almost. As if you were that lucky to stumble into that many opportunities to even found a career. But that was my mindset.
Then McLaren came knocking.
The truth of the matter is if I hadn’t made a connection at a Sydney ferry terminal with a random stranger and his Hasselblad four years ago, the door wouldn’t have unlocked.
But that’s only half the story. If I hadn’t had the talent to be professionally considered, if I hadn’t of fostered a relationship out of the goodness of my heart, if I hadn’t been a passionate automotive enthusiast who has read every TopGear mag between 2007 and 2019, I also wouldn’t of had the door open.
These things got me to an email introduction, got me to a portfolio submission, to a zoom interview, to a business class return flight, to Monterey.
I wanted, no needed to talk about this with you all. Some of you following me from the start. I never expected to be here but I dreamt of it like I did.
The connections I made on this trip were worth every penny, every night of 2 hours sleep. The friends made, emails exchanged, photos edited, articles written. This was the best week of my life without a shadow of a doubt.
Best part is, there is no one who got me here but me. I’ve made it to the top of the mountain. But guess what I see? The next one.
“It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey”. If you’re pi**ed off by that statement, use that fuel, but call me when you get to your first summit. Sucks to say, they were right.
But that doesn’t mean you don’t savour that stunning view.
If you read all of this and the rest of the captions, thank you. I owe a lot of this to the 14k legends that follow along this childhood dream.
