Aquabumps Aquabumps is a website and daily email dedicated to early morning beach life. Which beach? All of the images are taken by ::uge.

Daily photos from the beach/surf by photographer Eugene Tan (:: Uge) See more at www.aquabumps.com or checkout our gallery at 151 Curlewis Street Bondi Beach NSW 2026 Australia. Aquabumps depicts images of waves, surfers (good and bad), swimmers, sunrises and whatever happens in the wee hours down the beach every weekday. Bondi mainly (we’re based there) but quite often Hawaii, Tahiti, Maldives, Indonesia and Fiji. We’ve been doing this for since 1999 (that’s 12 years kids, well before blogs became popular). It’s free to subscribe to our daily photo newsletter and 40,000 people happily exist on our mailing list. (Some readers have been on there for 12 years!) You can join our list by entering your email address in the box provided on the top right of this page. Around 10:30am each week day, the images are emailed directly to you in a HTML formatted newsletter…so you don’t have to open any annoying attachments, just scroll down through the highly crafted images, read a short (hopefully amusing) paragraph or two and then back to work! Yes, a little reminder of what’s happening outside your office cubicle. The idea came about in 1999 when Eugene Tan, a frustrated Creative Director combined his three passions: photography, surfing and the web. In the nineties blogs hadn’t evolved yet, but Eugene, better known as ::uge (yooj), thought he’d provide a nice daily break for his mates to see a bit of surf at work. The daily updates started flowing more consistently and the first handful of friends became thousands of people logging on from all over the globe. Even Aquabumps’s page is a hive of activity with 20,000 followers (April 2011). Shooting at daybreak has become his morning ritual. He’s had a camera in his hand since he was 9 years old and a keen surfer for 26 years. Uge is constantly seeking unique angles for his morning images, whether it’s shooting from underwater, in helicopters, or from a cliff in South Bondi. If you like the images and want to see more, the Aquabumps Gallery in Bondi displays the images blown up in their full glory. Aquabumps opened it’s first gallery in 2004 and we send artwork all over the world. All artworks are signed by the artist and available in various sizes, prices and framing techniques. We take great pride in our artworks – the top quality materials used in framing and printing have been well researched by our team over the past decade. Aquabumps was the first gallery in Australia to adopt the new metallic prints, acrylic face mounts in 2002 and acrylic blocks in 2009. We also launched the long-awaited Aquabumps book, “A Day At Bondi” in 2010. The collection of images depicts 12 hours at Sydney’s most famous stretch of sand. Over 200 salt-crusted pages document sunrise to sunset, and all that happens in between. The book is available to purchase online and can be sent just about anywhere in the world. Its 1st run nearly sold out in 6 weeks.

Calm before the chaos at Bondi.

Glorious morning before the southerly kicked in. Golden light, cool water and little clean waves.

More swell tomorrow, but Sunday is when things get interesting. A powerful low forming in the Tasman is set to deliver some serious south swell, strong winds and potentially wild conditions through Monday. Buckle up.

Our new Jeremyville x Aquabumps tee went nuts yesterday. Freshly restocked after selling out in just six days last time.

Bondi slept in this morning. So did the waves.

After last night’s downpour, we scored a wonky 1–2 foot of nothing. Four laps of the prom and not much to show for it.

Reckon a sunset swim and a $20 steak at Depot might save the day.

In better news, our Aquabumps x Jeremyville tees are BACK. First drop sold out in just SIX DAYS. Fresh colourway, new print, ready to ship. Unlikely we’ll get another run in before Xmas.

What a difference a day makes.

Yesterday, postcard Bondi. Today, moody skies, a few sprinkles, muggy 25°C and a strangely empty beach.

Waves? A flimsy 1–2ft. Longboards and featherweight groms only.

Cloud 9 in the Philippines looks like a tropical skatepark. Who’s keen? Might let the hype settle before booking flights.

Friday’s looking promising. Bigger swell, offshore winds and hopefully some proper waves.

🎄 **SPOTTED YOURSELF IN MY PHOTOS?**

Paddling a ski, swimming at Icebergs, catching a wave or just floating around Bondi?

We can turn that moment into a Christmas gift. Your photo, beautifully printed and framed in Australia, tucked into our signature Aquabumps gift box.

47 × 34cm | $250 | 2–3 weeks to make.

Seven weeks until Christmas. Time to get cracking.

Happy Tuesday, Bondi.

What an incredible beach day. Blue water, a perfect 23 degrees, a 12-knot nor’easter puffing through and little waist-high waves. Summer is knocking.High tide is at 3:18 pm.

Yes, I know this post is late. And no, I haven’t just returned from a five-hour session lazing on the beach, although I wish I had.

If you can, knock off work early and get down for a swim. It’s an absolute cracker out there, especially with some drizzle potentially on the cards tomorrow.

Small swells look set to hang around until Friday.

It’s insane to think Christmas is only 7 weeks away! SEVEN. We need around 4 weeks for international gallery orders with shipping, so if you are considering stuff from our gallery, let’s tork now or check out some popular ones: : uge

As forecast, the swell has arrived, and Bondi is 4–6 foot. There’s a heap of energy in the ocean today.

The swell is coming from dead south, 180 degrees, with a 10-second period. That’s almost a direct hit on Bondi, which is probably why we’re seeing some of the biggest waves in the neighbourhood.

At sunrise, conditions were surprisingly clean and surfable, with a few fun little funnels. Plenty of closeouts too, so you had to be patient to find a good one. Yeah, it’s too big for our sensitive little sand banks!

The southerly wind has since kicked in at around 9 knots, adding some onshore junk to the lineup now at 11am.

Water’s a pleasant 20 degrees, air temp is 20 as I write, heading for a top of 21. A beautiful day to be down the beach, even if the ocean’s a bit angry.

Tomorrow looks promising for another surf, and Saturday’s shaping up to be a cracker at 27 degrees.

See you down there,

The morning blog has turned into an afternoon edition. The day just got away from me. Apologies for the late delivery!

There were a few waves around Bondi this morning, some nice light and surprisingly few people in the water. Not a bad way to kick off a Wednesday.

Right now, there’s a bit more size, around 3–4 foot, with the odd decent one if you’re patient. It’s looking a little straight, with plenty of closeouts, but there are definitely a few waves to be had.

The southerly swell is doing the heavy lifting, around 3.5ft at 8 seconds from 184°, with a smaller ENE swell in the mix. Winds are currently WSW at 11 knots, gusting to 15, keeping things reasonably clean with a bit of cross-shore texture.

The water’s back up to a much friendlier 21 degrees. Hallelujah! Air temperature is also 21.

Looking ahead, Thursday should have some fun south swell, with a bigger pulse expected Friday. Plenty of waves on the menu.

Enjoy the arvo.

Finally, some decent waves at Bondi! And warm water. Hallelujah.

Lately we’ve been stuck with a steady diet of ENE windswell, which isn’t ideal for Bondi as we don’t face that direction. The ocean’s also been chilly, thanks to some upwelling dragging cold water up from the depths.

Sunday night’s southerly change has turned things around. The water’s back up around 20 degrees, and this morning we had 3–4 footers rolling into Bondi. Small crew, a few hollow pipes and, believe it or not, I even spotted a barrel!

Don’t go thinking you’re going to score Indo tubes all morning. I found one diamond in the rough amongst plenty of ordinary waves.

It’s a cool 19 degrees today, with the odd sprinkle possible. Tomorrow looks sunny, and Thursday could deliver a bit more size, with 4–6 footers forecast.

Looking further ahead, Sunday looks like a corker, 27 degrees! Summer’s knocking.

I was surprised to see a little wave this morning. We’ve got waist-high ENE swell with NNE winds, and a few surprisingly rideable ones sneaking through Bondi.

It was all sunshine and smiles earlier, but now the rain has rolled in. The water is particularly chilly. I’m guessing these persistent northerlies have stirred up some cold-water upwelling, bringing icy water from the depths to the surface.

The big news along our coastline is the whale carcass that’s washed into Lurline Bay, between Coogee and Maroubra. Both beaches have been closed as a precaution, but Bondi is still open for business, with plenty of people in the water.

Whale carcasses are like giant shark magnets, drawing in hungry predators from far and wide. Something to be mindful of if you’re heading for a dip.

Apparently, the authorities are leaning towards letting nature take its course and allowing the whale to decompose naturally. It’s in a tricky spot to retrieve, wedged amongst the rocks, and they’re working with local Indigenous rangers on the best approach.

There’s a new variety of small wave on offer today. Onshore!

Bondi is tiny and barely surfable. The ENE windswell isn’t doing us any favours, with Bondi facing away from most of the swell energy. Around the corner, you might jag a few semi-catchable waves, but don’t expect miracles.

The Bronte to Bondi coastal walk is absolutely packed. Not just with the arty sculptury thingies, but run clubs, power walkers and an endless parade of activewear.

We had a little rain overnight, with another sprinkle possible today and a top of 20 degrees. But gee, it was super on my morning shooting ride. First morning in ages I could get around in just a T-shirt. Summer is creeping in.

In local news, Bondi Rescue looks set for a comeback! Waverley Council has agreed in principle to bring the show back for another three seasons after a two-year negotiation. More cameras, more rescues and more crazy Harries.

yew!
