Canberra Birds and Wildlife

Canberra Birds and Wildlife There is such an amazing diversity of birds and wildlife in and around Canberra. We need to try to find balance. Gerard Jenkins

I created this page to share my love of nature (particularly birds) and photography, and to share some of the incredible beauty we are lucky to have here in and around Canberra, and in Australia. :)

Although I started the page to focus on and celebrate the diversity of wildlife in and around Canberra, I love to travel, so I also share photos from places further afield from time to time. I've fou

nd a lot of joy and peace watching and photographing nature, and I hope to encourage others to do the same. We need nature for our well-being, and now more than ever, it needs us for its well-being.

Good interview with Gavin of ACT Snake Removals about the history and current status of government funding for snake removals (there is none)

This season has already been the most challenging so far for ACT snake catcher Dr Gavin Smith, who is also an ecologist at the ANU. Dr Smith had at least 20 calls yesterday from people needing help with unwanted visitors, all of which he needs to balance with the demands of a full-time job.

Summer (Winyuwangga in the Ngunnawal language) has arrived! A time to celebrate butterflies, beetles, birds from the north (we all know the call) and beautiful plants. A season to love despite days in the 30s and surprisingly high humidity. The common brown butterflies are everywhere at the moment. But soon the females will disappear to wait out the heat before laying their eggs in the cooler months (clever butterflies). This edition was released some time ago, but always handy for those of us still trying to work out the different bird species...

If you see a bird but don’t record it in an app, did it even happen?
