Some of you might already know that I absolutely love treehoppers 🥹💚
I am almost obsessed with them, and every time I find one, I get super excited 😄
This one we found in the Japanese Gardens in Malaysia was no exception. Just look at that shape! Their crazy head structures are what make them so special and unique. It almost looks like a tiny sculpture walking around on a leaf 🌿✨

Moments like this always make me stop and just enjoy the details. These tiny creatures are so easy to miss, but once you see them, you can’t look away. Definitely one of my favorite insect groups ever 🪲💚

Treehoppers belong to the family Membracidae and are known for their unusual “helmets,” which are extensions of their thorax. These shapes can look like thorns, leaves, or even other animals, helping them blend into their surroundings or scare off predators. Many species also communicate using vibrations through plants, which is something we usually cannot even notice. They are small, but incredibly diverse and full of surprises 🌱

Since I first heard about the three indigenous species of scorpions, I wanted to find them. Out of all Austria, my region has the highest occurrence of them. 🦂

They are usually active at night and hide under dead wood, bark, and stones during the day. They are incredibly interesting and beautiful. As usual, I couldn’t decide which one to post, so here is a mega post with three different shots and a handy shot for size comparison. Have a nice Sunday, folks! 😊

One of these fascinating scorpions is Alpiscorpius germanus, also known as the German Scorpion. These scorpions are small, typically less than 3 cm long, and can be found in forested areas. They are harmless to humans, with a sting that feels like a mild bee sting. 🌲🦂

Alpiscorpius germanus is interesting because of its adaptability to colder climates, which is rare for scorpions. They are more active during warm nights and are often found under rocks and logs during the day. Their dark brown or black color helps them blend into their surroundings, making them hard to spot. 🔍🌿

I hope you enjoy these shots and get a sense of how amazing these tiny creatures are. Have a wonderful Sunday! 🦂😊

Atypus muralis, a very special spider and for sure absolutely beautiful. 🕷️ I love to try new angles and perspectives when doing close-ups. I really liked this composition, very close to the spider’s eyes and it´s huge mandibles. 📸

Atypus muralis, also known as the European Purse-Web Spider, is unique because of its unusual hunting method. These spiders build silk tubes on walls or in the ground and wait for prey to touch the silk. Then, they quickly grab their prey through the web. 🕸️✨

These spiders have large, strong mandibles and are one of the largest spiders in Austria. They are quite rare and usually stay hidden, so spotting one is always exciting. 🌿🔍

I spy with my little eye a nice little fly (in my garden of course). 😊 Have a nice , guys!

Flies are also fascinating up close. They have big, complex eyes that let them see in many directions at once. Their wings beat incredibly fast, allowing them to fly quickly and change direction in an instant. 📸✨

Next time you see a fly, take a moment to appreciate its role in the world. 😎

This is my take on the same scene that .tjhooker666 posted last week. Prey scenes are always a good thing for , don’t you think? 🕷️🍴

This spider is Diaea dorsata, also known as the Green Crab Spider. They are small and have a unique green color that helps them blend into their surroundings. These spiders are usually found on leaves and flowers, waiting to ambush their prey. 🌿🌸

It has been raining for days, and the temperature is quite low again. 🌧️ I didn’t really want to go out, but luckily, I found this resting wasp on a flower in my garden. It was nicely covered in some raindrops and very still, perfect for getting some nice stacks just in time for (if that’s a thing). 🐝📸

This wasp is Polistes dominula, also known as the European Paper Wasp. These wasps are common in many parts of the world. They are known for their distinctive black and yellow coloring and their habit of building nests out of paper-like material. 🏠✨

Polistes dominula are social insects and live in colonies. They are not usually aggressive towards humans unless their nest is threatened. These wasps are beneficial because they help control pest populations by feeding on insects like caterpillars and flies. 🌿🐛

Here we go again with one of those amazing forest mite taxis, a beautiful Carabus. They really seem to like the area around here; I find one nearly every photowalk in the woods.

Let me share a little story behind this shot. 🕷️

A while back, .tjhooker666 had this brilliant idea to search for a very rare and endangered giant wolf spider known as Arctosa cinerea. This elusive creature is only found in a small population in Austria. We set out on our quest, but unfortunately, we couldn't pinpoint the exact location.

Nevertheless, we did find a wolf spider, and for a moment, we thought it might be the one we were seeking. However, it turned out to be a similar but slightly different species.

officer.tjhooker666 was determined and continued the search, and fortunately, he discovered a spot with a dense population of these magnificent spiders. Every time he visited, he'd find 3-5 adult giant wolf spiders.

This Friday, he took me to that special place, which, to be honest, didn't seem like the dream destination for these critters. Sometimes, cars would even drive through the area. But within just a few minutes, we found the first one. I was absolutely awestruck by their size and beauty – it was a truly magical moment. 🌟

And guess what? Half an hour later, we hit the jackpot: a wolf spider caught in the act of devouring its prey. But that shot deserves its own post.

I've added some full-body shots so you can fully appreciate the beauty of these creatures.

Last year, my flower garden had an unexpected guest - a stunning green European Mantis! For several weeks she was living here and I enjoyed our daily 'how you doin' rendezvous until one day, she mysteriously vanished. But luckily I captured her beauty in a series of photographs, including this extreme close-up!
