Is your elopement in the Alps about the experience, or the aesthetics?

I saw an article recently outlining what it takes to have an ‘’instagrammable wedding’’.... and I just had to take a breath 😅

The pressure to make your wedding look a certain way online is real, and it’s something I think about a lot in this industry. Because the reason I do this work has never been about aesthetics. It’s about being out in these places with people who are genuinely moved by them and feel most at home in nature.

The couples I work best with are the ones who want an experience that’s true to them...not the most Instagrammable version of eloping in the Alps. We love working with couples who choose details that are meaningful to them. Not because they photograph well. The couples who are looking for something unique, and possibly a little more off the beaten path.

The days I feel like I did my job best are the ones I know the couple truly enjoyed the experience of being in these incredible places and connecting.

There’s a version of local knowledge that you can find on social media, blog posts, and travel guides…

And then there’s the kind that comes from 300+ summits climbed, 6+ years of living in the Alps, years of working in tourism, and a genuine obsession with hiking through hidden gems most people never get to see. 🫶

We rarely suggest an Alps elopement location because it’s popular. We often recommend locations we’ve hiked to ourselves, (sometimes more than a few times), or come across while diving deep into a map. We’ve spent time getting to know the weather patterns, what areas typically see wildflowers or fall colors when, the areas that aren’t quite worth the hype, and how to find privacy and seclusion.

When a couple tells us they want somewhere off the beaten path, you won’t find us picking a spot off Instagram or Tiktok. We’re often thinking about that spot we hiked to 3 years ago and have had in the back of our minds ever since.

It’s local knowledge like this that comes from years genuinely loving + living in the places we work.

A true story about my early days as a photographer ⬇

When I photographed my first couples session, I literally said a prayer that I’d take at least one good photo.

Not three. One. (because I wasn’t greedy yet 😂)

By that point, I’d spent a few years photographing the places I hiked for my own enjoyment, but I had zero idea how to go about photographing people. While living in a tiny town in Alaska, our friends got engaged, and Scott encouraged me to reach out and see if they wanted someone to take photos of them (and I’ll be forever grateful for that nudge).

I showed up with an entry-level Sony, my kit lens, a trusty 50mm…and a whole lot of hope.

I took two or three photos that night that I felt good about. When I look back at them now I’m still a little surprised they turned out okay 😅

That “please just let me take one good photo” prayer followed me for probably the first six to eight months of photographing couples. No joke, every.single.session.

Wow, have things come a long way since then. Tens of thousands of dollars in photography education later, and a desire to keep growing, I don’t carry that deep-rooted fear anymore (mostly).

I still get a little nervous at the start of each wedding season since winter I spend planning and marketing a lot more than shooting. And I’ve definitely had the dream more than a few times where I’ve completely forgotten how to use my camera. If any other photographers relate to that one, please let me know I’m not alone 😉

One thing I love about photography is that while the growth isn’t linear, each year of experience teaches me how to navigate every type of light, weather, and scenario the mountains have….and keep creating work that feels new and meaningful. That part will never get old. 💛

These two eloped in the Swiss Alps and really put the ‘’adventure’’ in ‘’adventure elopement’’.

A+M came to us wanting to experience a little bit of everything, all while in one of Switzerland’s more wild regions, the Engadin. As avid travelers who feel most at home in nature, they opted to climb a via ferrata (they both already had climbing experience, so this seemed like a natural choice), stargazing whilst staying in a mountain hotel, and then exchanging vows next to a secluded alpine lake.

Day 1 was the via ferrata, and I’ll be honest…I’m fairly scared of heights (love the mountains, complicated relationship with exposure 😅), but I will go wherever you ask me to go. A+M had absolutely zero fear and completely crushed it. So cool to document, even if my heart rate heart was on the high side. After hours on the mountain, the day ended with cheese fondue and glimpses of the night sky as clouds rolled in and out.

Day two brought some weather excitement (not uncommon in the Alps) and ultimately, A+M exchanged vows right as a rainstorm rolled through. By the time we made it back down to the car, the skies had cleared. So naturally we decided to head back up another mountain for sunset portraits…because sometimes, it’s worth the gamble, and we were not far from the cable car. At sunset, we managed to stay mostly dry and ended the night with a full rainbow stretching across the mountains.

This part of Switzerland is so different from what most people picture when they think Swiss Alps. Rugged, wild, with little wildflowers somehow tucked into rocky corners, even above 3,000 meters. It’s one of our favorite regions and A+M saw just about every type of scenery (and weather) it had to offer.

What a memorable two days. ☀🌈☔

When you think you want to elope in Austria….but instead you wind up in Germany’s Bavarian Alps getting married on a mountain. Because Germany has sweeping views, alpine lakes, and alllll the Sound of Music vibes…including *edelweiss* (did you know the opening scene to the Sound of Music was actually filmed in Germany?).

Leading up to J+C’s elopement, we had some last-minute pivoting due to forecasted thunderstorms. It meant hustling to swap picking up the florals and cake, tweaking the timeline, but these two just rolled with it without missing a beat. The flexibility paid off, and in the end, we got brilliant blue skies (albeit very toasty temps).

Their adventure started with a first look next to a lake, before rowing a boat across brilliant blue water surrounded by mountains. Afterward, we took a hike, basking in every cool breeze that came our way. The ceremony spot - pure magic. A wide panoramic spot high in the mountains surrounded by Edelweiss flowers. And, if you don’t know much about Edelweiss flowers, there’s some pretty cool lore about them (for another post), and, they’re pretty hard to find, so I was losing my mind 😍

While there are so many moments to love, two that especially stand out are C’s hand-drawn cake topper, along with vow book illustrations in the back. J also surprised C with a hula dance she’d been secretly practicing, complete with handmade lei. It was so touching, I struggled to look through my viewfinder 💛

The German Alps are such an underrated place to get married, and hopefully seeing a day like this may convince you to go against the grain and elope in Bavaria.

I am stubborn to my core. But even I had a moment where I wondered if it was worth trying anymore...

There was a period of about six months where I genuinely didn’t know if any of this (the business + our life) was going to work.

Scott and I had been living in Germany for 18 months at that point. I had my business running here. We had started building a life. And then we moved to a different landkreis (essentially a county) for Scott’s internship, and my visa situation completely fell apart. It turns out, visas in Germany can vary from county to county. 😅

I started getting letters in the mail saying my visa was being denied and I would be required to move back to the U.S. I became scared to check the mail.

I’m not exaggerating when I say there were a lot of sleepless nights and a lot of tears. We were married. I had money in my account. I had work booked for the following year…but none of it mattered. We just lived in a place where they didn’t want me to stay.

I remember driving 90 minutes to an immigration lawyer’s office in Munich, completely stressed, when my maps stopped working, my phone lost service, and I got lost trying to find the building. All of it bubbled over at once, and I had to pull over, sobbing, trying to figure out where to go.

In that moment I genuinely wondered if it was even worth trying anymore.

I’m stubborn to my core. Normally, when someone tells me I can’t do something I am about a hundred times more likely to push harder for it. But that day I just didn’t know if it was possible.

Thankfully, the lawyer made a huge difference. Three *more* months of stress, uncertainty, and money later, I got my visa.

I cried tears of joy driving to the first elopement I shot after it came through.

A few years removed from all of that, it’s still hard to believe how scary it actually was. And it’s still not lost on me how awesome it is that this is still working. That we are still here (and working toward dual citizenship). That couples keep trusting us with their most magical days in these mountains.

I am grateful for a lot of things. Scott’s unwavering support is at the top of that list. And so are all of you 💛

Throwing it back to this Swiss Alps elopement *just* shy of a year ago.

The mountains around Eastern Switzerland are hard to oversell, and A+D’s elopement in Appenzell is one that perfectly showcases that.

These two kept things beautifully simple. A morning hike up a steep mountainside with cowbells ringing in the distance, first looks among mountain meadows, and vows exchanged while D’s dress whipped dramatically in the wind (because ).

After an emotional ceremony, they took shots of local Appenzeller spirits, soaked up the views, and wandered down to one of Appenzell’s most iconic lakes before ending the night in town over cold beers. The scenery, day, and experience brought a little bit of everything….and all of it felt straight out of a fairytale.

Sometimes, you just have to celebrate getting married by eloping in Italy. 😍

It can look like - staying in a cozy chalet nestled in the Dolomites, eating pizza by an alpine lake, exchanging vows surrounded by towering summits, marveling as warm light bathes the most majestic peaks you’ve ever seen, and then staring at a sky of brilliant stars in wonder (just before the clouds roll in).

Was that last paragraph just one long run-on sentence? Definitely.

Was that exactly what E+Z did during their Dolomites elopement? Also, yes, and it was positively magical.

From the very beginning, we truly felt this pair’s excitement to co-create something that felt like an experience. And on the day of, that’s exactly what it felt like. E said at the end of the night, ‘’this day was life changing’’.

We believe that the mountains and quality time outdoors can do that for everyone. And, building core memories together in a place that you’re experiencing together for the first time is a part of that.

While ‘’perfect’’ weather is never a guarantee, and sometimes, you just have to roll with bumps in the trail, don’t forget this - the journey is the experience, so don’t forget to have fun in the process.
