Here is a sequence of images that I captured of a male baboon known as Chacma Baboon which is also known as the Cape Baboon, who came down to the water to have a drink. After having a drink he sat down and gazed out over that lake, it was almost as you he was contemplating his life choices.🤣
After his time of reflection he then turned and looked at us on the house boat and yawned exposing his large canines. After deciding that we were not very interesting he went back up the the bank to the rest of his troop who were sat on some rock nearby.
The Chacma baboon is one of the largest of all the monkeys and the males can weigh up to 45kg / 100lbs. They are located mainly in Southern Africa and spend most of their day on the ground in troops that range between 20- 200 individuals. In adult males, powerful canines can grow to a length of close to 4cm, similar in size to those of a leopard, and are used in battles for dominance and defence of the troop. Crocodiles, leopards, and lions will all prey on baboons, and some painted wolves (African wild dogs) of Mana Pools famously specialize in hunting the baboon troops of the region. Leopards, in particular, have a fierce rivalry with baboons, and certain individual leopards learn to take advantage of the diurnal habits of chacma baboons to stalk them at night while they rest in trees.
