The George opening of "Salvage".

Plett-based photographer and our very own Marketing Manager, Nicola Ash, opened her 'Salvage' exhibition at the George Museum on Friday evening. The photographs, which were first displayed at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, tell the story of Bulawayo's rail industry.

The exhibition can be viewed in the Sayers Hall during museum opening hours until Friday 7 April.

Promises, promises.

For the first time in what feels like weeks the clouds have encircled Bulawayo. A distant rumble of thunder, some far away lightning, a spit and a spot. Still it doesn't rain. But it will. Take heart it will.

Picasso on looking at art.

“Do you ever know what the birds are singing? You don’t. But you listen to them anyway. So, sometimes with art, it is important just to look.”

"The world is too big to be changed by an art object, but I think art, at least some art, has the ability to bring about awareness to our ignorance, but also alter our experience when engaging with it." - Simphiwe Ndzube

Multi-award winning artist Simphiwe Ndzube has just chalked himself up another prize, the prestigious Tollman Award for the Visual Arts.

An excerpt from the "Artist Statement" -

Bulawayo's history is a complex and beautiful story that can and should be viewed from multiple perspectives. This is not meant as a nostalgic trip down memory lane or a simple judgement of the present state of things but rather a passage in time, in a particular place, with a golden thread of hope emerging at the end. A thread that demands our collective memory and history be taken into consideration and that our individual worth and experiences be revalued and revived in order to turn them into the foresight we so desperately need to action change.

The title "Salvage" implies that hope is still alive -

"Hope is not the belief that everything was, is or will be fine. Hope is about broad perspectives with specific possibilities, ones that invite or demand that we act." - Rebecca Solnit

What we do matters. This isn't a story about a "place" it's the story of our lives and how we choose to live them.
