Chapter 12 - Godfrey 'Ucar' Chitalu

In the early 1980s, as a young boy, I had the opportunity to attend soccer matches with my father and brothers, where we witnessed the legendary Godfrey 'Ucar' Chitalu play live. During a tense match where Kabwe Warriors were tied 0-0 with Red Arrows at Lusaka's Nkoloma Stadium, Chitalu, in the final moments, controlled a long throw from his goalkeeper with his chest at midfield. He then surged forward, weaving past five defenders to score a goal reminiscent of Diego Maradona's 'Goal of the Century' against England in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinals. The goal was so spectacular that even the home fans couldn't contain their excitement. Moments later, Kabwe Warriors triumphed over Red Arrows with a 1-0 victory. I have never forgotten that incredible afternoon. Back then, we were unaware of the significance of scoring many goals. Little did we realize that 'Ucar' would become the most prolific goal scorer in the history of world soccer.

Chapter 11 - Samuel 'Zoom' Ndhlovu

Samuel 'Zoom' Ndhlovu was born on September 27, 1937, in Luanshya, Northern Rhodesia, which is now known as Zambia. He passed away on October 10, 2001, in Mufulira, Zambia. During his childhood, he moved to Mufulira with his family. It was there that Samuel, at the tender age of eight, formed his own football team and competed against older children. In 1956, he joined the Mufulira Mine Team, which would later be renamed Mufulira Wanderers Football Club. Ndhlovu was given the nickname ‘Zoom’ by an admirer of his dribbling prowess, a name that became emblematic of his legacy in Zambian soccer.

Chapter 11 - The Mufulira Wanderers Legends

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Pictured from left to right are Frederick 'Kashi-Fire' Kashimoto, the author, and Baron Mungomba. They feature in Chapter 11, dedicated to Samuel 'Zoom' Ndhlovu, in my book from the Zambian Legends Series, subtitled "Some K.K. 11 Greats."

Daniel Kaoma and I met them in 2020, and they served as our guides to "Zoom's" place in Kantashi.

I once observed Frederick 'Kashi Fire' Kashimoto during a K.K.11 training session in 1988 at Harry Mwanga Nkumbula Stadium in Monze. At that time, I was in Grade 7 and served as a ball boy for Monze Swallows. Having heard much about Fred, I was finally able to witness his speed, agility, and tenacity firsthand. Despite his small stature and alternating between wings, he effortlessly dribbled past defenders and scored impressive goals.

Renowned as 'the computer' for his exceptional dribbling skills, precise shooting, and remarkable ability to synergize with any teammate, Alex Chola's impact on the field was nothing short of amazing. Whether in central park or as a formidable striker, his name, alongside Godfrey Chitalu, is enshrined in Zambia's Hall of Fame in golden letters.

In one of the pictures, the ‘Master Dribbler’-a title earned for his exceptional ability to maneuver the ball past defenders with ease – Alex Chola leaves a defender sprawled on the ground.

Chola, who holds the second-highest goal-scoring record for the country after Ucar, burst onto the local scene like a magical comet in 1974 at the tender age of 19. Just two years after joining Mufulira Blackpool, he was honored as the country's Soccer Player of the Year at 21. In that same season, Chola and his team triumphed over their town rivals, Butondo Western Tigers, with a 4-3 victory in the Independence Cup final—a thrilling match held at the now-demolished Dag Hammarskjold Stadium in Ndola.

Chola's dazzling performances captured the attention of major clubs, including local rivals Mufulira Wanderers, Rhokana United (now Nkana FC), the military's Green Buffaloes, and the Kitwe powerhouse Power Dynamos.

Ultimately, Kitwe's Arthur Davies Stadium team allured Chola in 1980. The team's offers of a modern house, a substantial salary, and additional perks were a testament to the recognition and rewards Chola received for his exceptional talent.

His versatility was one of the most striking aspects of the ‘Human Computer.’ Whether playing as an attacking midfielder or as a second striker, Chola consistently delivered a devastating impact for both his club and his country.

Chapter 9 -Peter (Abaleya) Kaumba.

Peter Kaumba's exceptional talent was epitomized by his remarkable achievements in 1982. That year, he earned the nickname Abaleya as he clinched three prestigious domestic awards: Zambia’s Footballer of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, and top scorer with 35 goals across all competitions. He became the sole player to win this trio of accolades in a year, a feat that continues to inspire football enthusiasts to this day.

Today, Peter is a widower and retiree, a loving father to three children and a doting grandfather to eight grandchildren. He resides in Kitwe's Ndeke Village, where he continues to embody the same humility that we first encountered. In our recent conversation, his pleasant and cooperative nature was evident, despite a wavering tone. Peter is second from left in the touchline picture. Good afternoon my dear brothers and sisters all over the world. I want to share with you my blessings of this morning. I recently wrote to the United Church of Zambia as the author and architect of the First K.K. Day School Educational Tour of Lubwa Mission. My proposal to the church as custodians of Lubwa Mission was inviting them to partner with me to realize the following objectives of my project.

1. To forever preserve the legacy of our founding father, Kenneth David Kaunda, and those of other freedom fighters, especially from the Muchinga Province of Zambia through education especially to scholars.
2. To attract sponsorship for the restoration of the Lubwa Mission heritage and maintain it to international standards.
3. To learn and sample the tourism attractions of the Northern Tourism Circuit especially in Muchinga Province.
4. To learn and experience some of the social and economic activities in the area.

So, this morning after bouncing at a colleague's office off Mosi -oa Tunya Road in Lusaka's woodlands area I decided to proceed to my office around the Manda Hill Area. So, as I was driving up Mosi Tunya Road, I noticed the UCZ Headquarters office building to my left and decided to try my chance with a physical follow-up over my proposal since my phone calls were to no avail. As soon as I arrived the Administrative Secretary, Mr. Alivet Mwale exclaimed "Oh there you are the man with many names, just as well the General Secretary is around today, can you give me a minute so that I can brief him on your proposal?"

After i gave him the nod he walked out of his office and after two minutes came back and said, "Ba Lombe, let's go and explain your proposal to the General Secretary at his request". Two minutes later i was shocked to be in a meeting of my life with the General Secretary and Synod Bishop of the United Church of Zambia. By the way, the Synod Bishop is the head of the entire United Church here in Zambia.

Five minutes later, my proposal was given a green flag and as we speak my project has climbed up the ladder. From left to right in the picture below are Reverend Chipasha Musaba - General Secretary of the United Church of Zambia, The Author, and Reverend Bishop Festus Chulu - Synod Bishop of the United Church of Zambia.

Chapter 8 - Boniface 'Chitapo Chimo' Simutowe.

In today's football world, it's extraordinary for a player under 20 to score over 50 goals in all competitions. Yet, this feat is attributed to Simutowe, known by three nicknames -Chitapochimo, Fumachu, and Chester Master. Such an achievement is indeed a rarity in domestic football.

The formidable trio of Simutowe, Godfrey Chitalu, and Kaposa, which dominated the Railway Ground from 1971 to 1974, arguably remains unmatched in the annals of Zambian football. For example, within the league itself, the trio netted an impressive 94 goals in the remarkable 1972 season.

Chapter 7 - Richard Stephenson

Richard Stephenson is a businessman residing in Ndola's Itawa township. He is a widower who lost his beloved wife in 2023. Richie is blessed with several children and grandchildren. As previously mentioned, Richie, Ackim Musenge, and Peter Kaumba are not only soft-spoken and humble but also extremely friendly. I believe their high discipline and dedication is why they have outlived many of their peers. The ex-Zambia schoolboy international was appreciated for his versatility in playing both defensive and attacking roles in the midfield. Chapter Six (6) Freddie Mwila Snr. The Ghost (Chiwa)

Freddie Mwila Snr, born on July 6, 1946, in Kasama, was raised by his grandparents while his parents, Dismas Chilufya and Senefa Chola, worked in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. In 1952, he relocated to Kitwe to begin his education.

Mwila's love for soccer blossomed during his school years as he played in local townships and attended matches at Scrivener Stadium, presently known as Nkana Stadium.

He is rated as one of the country's greatest players and coaches. He now lives on his farm in the Mapepe Area of Chilanga District. He has a youthful wife, several children, and grandchildren. Jericho " The Russian Tanker" Shinde is presently part of the Nkana F.C. developmental team. He is a family man with a wife, five children, and thirteen grandchildren. Residing in Kitwe's Ndeke Village, just like his fellow townsman Peter Kaumba, Shinde is another celebrated K.K.11 'Kitwe Legend'.

He is featured in Chapter 5 of my book on Zambian Legends, subtitled "Some K.K. 11 Greats." This chapter also sets the stage for the other Kitwe Legends of the K.K. 11 who are highlighted in my book.

Our interactions have been frequented over the phone since 2020, with the latest occurring as I was concluding this book. Shinde's sense of humor remains as vibrant as always and can only be compared to another Kitwe soccer veteran, the late Kapambwe "Gentile" Mulenga.

Please access my priceless book through https://bit.ly/3WTtq78 for Jericho Shinde's professional Biography.
