Reflections of Africa Photography

Reflections of Africa Photography Photography by Coleen Williams and Fanie Maritz. Africa is a beautiful place that fills our souls.

We will never get tired of the beauty and tranquility of spending time in nature with the creatures that share their earth with us. This is a glimpse into the wonderful world that we have been privileged to see.

Early morning light makes even the ordinary look amazing... πŸ˜‰ Day 3 seemed to be bird day with so many nice photo opportunities...
An awesome sighting of a herd of Ellies (with some zebras) on a mission to somewhere... There is something special about watching and listening to how silently these big creatures move. πŸ’•

Day 2 started with some of the usual and some unusual... lovely Kudus and then wild dogs in the road.... loads of Buffalo... yellow billed oxpeckers...
And then definitely the highlight of the trip... the white lion... supposedly his name is 'Casper'... and he was busy making little white lions... 😜 I've always hoped to see a white lion so probably one of those 'sightings of a lifetime'... at Nsemani Dam near Satara...
Look out for the two headed waterbuck and zebras... 😜
This was the trip for some amazing buffalo bulls...
And of course more of the usual... πŸ˜‰

It's been a while since we posted anything...
Here are 3 days of our latest Kruger trip... Day 1 surprised us with a near kill by a Cheetah... no footage of that but it was awesome to see....
A Sharpes Grysbok as we headed down the Orpen road to Tambotie (we've never seen them this low down). And then spot the cute little owl. πŸ˜‰

Better late than never... Day 3.

A good start to the day is 'spot the leopard'... what amazing camouflage on top of that mound... this youngster seemed to be waiting for mom to come back... we also waited... we didn't get to see her be he eventually bounded off happily so we guess she had arrive but was just out of sight for us.

An elevated viewpoint on a waterhole makes for some interesting angles on some of the usual usuals...
Of course there has to be an ellie or two...
And then there was the most chilled Nyala bull ever... quite an impressive specimen too... this gave us a good chance to really take in the beauty of these antelope from close up...

A mound makes for some entertainment when there are some mongoose around... so is it mongoose or mongeese or mongooses? I never really know... 😜
A bit more fun at a waterhole with all sorts of creatures to be seen gives a nice break from driving as you sit and take in all the bush has to offer.

And of course what better way to end your day than 2 more leopards on your afternoon drive... πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

Yesterday I promised a post of her own for a very special Ellie.... so here she is...
Jubilala... She is one of the current female tuskers of Kruger.
We are always in such awe when we see an ellie with large tusks... not often do you see one of this length and very rare on a cow. Isn't she gorgeous??
We had to wonder who else actually noticed her as it seemed most vehicles just drove past probably assuming 'just more elephants' not realising how special that actually is... πŸ˜‰

Did you know you can see info about the Kruger tuskers... past, present and upcoming on the sanparks website? Here's the link... https://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/elephants/
If you see any Ellies with large tusks... take some pics... send it to them... they have a great research project...
Its actually so nice to get some info back on the Ellies you see... πŸ˜‰

Day 2 of our long weekend in Kruger...
How impressive can the kudus get? We keep thinking we've seen 'the one' and then we see another even more impressive one... 😜

Take a look at the monkey lollipop... you have to wonder why he didn't choose a bigger stick to perch on?!

Some beautiful Nyala's.... one of the map books claims their numbers are only 300 in the whole park... well I think we saw all 300 this weekend... 😜 Certainly no shortage of these beautiful creatures.

A tree full of vultures always makes us do a double take wondering if they are just chilling or if there is a kill nearby.

And then all the other creatures... the usual suspects... Impalas... Zebras... Warthogs... Ellies.... a Croc on a rock... the tallest of animals with an even taller tree.... and then the smaller cousin of the monitor lizard we saw the previous day... at least this one we managed to get some photos of... πŸ˜‰ A waterbuck bull with some very impressive horns... and the tiniest of tiny hyena pups having a game....

Sadly so many of the waterholes and dams were dry but as we sit listening to the rain on the roof we hope that soon it will will change. Look at the face on the baboon... it's as though his favourite pub just ran out of beer!

And then if you've stuck it out all the way to the end of the story... and the last of the photos... that elusive leopard did make an appearance... and in true leopard fashion right at that time when you're going to be late for the camp gate if you don't leave NOW! πŸ˜œπŸ˜†

Oh and watch out for my next post... a very special ellie... she deserves a post of her own. πŸ˜‰

It was long weekend so of course we headed to our favourite spot in the world... Kruger!!
The park was crazy busy with vehicles but it seemed just as busy with some amazing sightings.
Our first day started with 2 lion sightings in the Berg en Dal area. That was enough to get the adrenalin going for the day...
The rest of the day followed with a blur of some amazing elephants sightings... another lion... the most impressive rhino... and buffalo buffalo buffalo... of course not forgetting the little creatures like the steenbok and even a huge monitor lizard which unfortunately we weren't able to capture any great images of.
The most surprising sighting of the day... an ostrich on the Biyamiti loop... seems quite a strange place to find an ostrich. 😜

This was one of those unbelievable sightings that Kruger is so good at surprising one with.
We had headed out from Shingwedzi as the gates opened - it was still dark. Turning left at the T-junction and heading just a couple of hundred meters we came across a lioness with 4 young cubs. They soon became active and headed in the direction of the river. We decided to take a chance and head to the lollipop loop just before the river. We timed it perfectly and sure enough she appeared and crossed the road in front of us.
We decided to head to the other side of the loop in the hope to have her cross again. There we found a couple quietly sitting with a cup of coffee. When we informed them of the excitement heading their way they seemed quite nonchalant. We soon discovered why as they pointed to a leopard they had been sitting watching.
The leopard suddenly charged off with the lioness giving a slightly feeble chase before stopping and waiting for her cubs that were on their way. (The leopard was nowhere to be found).
The lioness and cubs then proceeded to the riverbed and walked for a short while before the lioness seemed to get a sniff of something and once again headed back up the embankment and across the road. We knew the drill and headed around the lollipop once again to find her. She then climbed a small tree where the leopard had stashed it's lunch and stole what was left of the carcass.
She dragged it back over the road and with the cubs hot on her heels she vanished into the bushes in the middle of the lollipop.
That was the end of that sighting as we never managed to locate them again but it surely left us grinning and chatting for hours afterwards.

The cutest little brand new brown wildebeest.... baby season is the best in Kruger. πŸ’•
On our way to Skukuza a gorgeous male lion comes walking towards us with a huge traffic jam following him from the other side.
On the side of the road the vultures collected the scraps left by the lions.

Everyone is always looking for the lions and this male lion was a great sighting as he lay right next to the road in the shade of a Mopani bush. Then of course who can resist the little cuties - Zebra babies with all their fluff are just too cute.
The highlight of the day though had to be this tusker! Looking on Sanparks we're pretty sure he is N’wendlamuhari. One certainly feels somewhat honored to be in the presence of such a great creature.

I'm going to work backwards from our latest trip in Kruger to catch up by sharing a few of our sightings at a time. :P

Early morning from Shingwedzi we started with a fantastic sunrise. Not long afterwards we came across a female cheetah with four youngsters in the river bed. We were lucky enough to have them come up and cross the road in front of us.
Then just further along we got to see a lovely lioness. She was lying on the embankment on the side of a ditch quite close to a small loop. She soon got up and also crossed the road in front of us.
