There is something about mist that reveals a whole other world.

My goodness, how many spiders are there in a field?!

Suddenly every web is there, catching the light, strung between grasses and glowing with tiny drops of water. Lines I would normally never notice become impossible to miss.

I love that about mist. It makes the unseen visible.

For a little while, an ordinary field becomes something completely different — full of delicate lines, hidden details and a thousand tiny things quietly going about their business.

I’ve been noticing a very keen interest in photography and design from my daughter lately, so naturally I did what any sensible mother would do…

I handed her a proper camera.

And now I’m starting to wonder if I should just call it an early retirement and hand over the business.

I think I might have found the perfect theme for my next issue.

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I’m stalling. But honestly, it’s mainly because of workload, so I’m giving myself a little room to let this one reveal itself rather than forcing it into being.

And I keep coming back to this:

THE COLOUR OF NOSTALGIA

It feels like it could go somewhere really beautiful. Not necessarily nostalgia in the obvious sense, but colour, memory, places, objects, landscapes, old things, familiar feelings… those little visual moments that somehow transport you somewhere else.

And perhaps, for once, I’m going to let the idea find me rather than chasing it.

And just as I vow not to shoot pink grass again for the rest of the year… this happens.

So, obviously, I had no choice.

There it was, disappearing into the mist, catching the softest light and looking far too beautiful to ignore.

I’m beginning to accept that my pink grass obsession may be a problem.

But honestly, I’m not ready to seek help just yet.

Maybe I’m rudely interrupting my own flow here, but I have to share this.

I got to spend an incredible hour in the mist at Buffeljags, and honestly, I could have stayed there all day.

The soft light, the pink grasses, the spiderwebs catching tiny drops of water, the whole landscape disappearing and reappearing around me. It was one of those mornings where I forgot about everything else and just photographed what was in front of me.

Sometimes the best part of my work is simply being able to stop and really look.

Anyway… back to the flow now. But I couldn’t not share this.

Feeling a little lost for words today.

A huge thank you to Lyra for featuring me as one of the remarkable women of Swellendam in today’s SwellenGram. I honestly don’t feel like I deserve such a lovely mention, but I’m incredibly grateful and, well… I’ll take it!

There are so many wonderful women doing inspiring things in this community, so to be included among them is a real honour.

Thank you, Lyra, for the beautiful words and for making my day.

And I’ll leave you with a little food for thought from Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea: “But man is not made for defeat.”

I think that feels like a rather fitting note to end on.

Thank you for coming along for this Weskus adventure. I hope you enjoyed this issue as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

And if you have any ideas for what the next theme should be, please send them my way. I’d love to hear what you’d like to see next.

This whole Weskus Wit story also brought The Dressmaker to mind — that delicious combination of beautiful clothes, strong characters and just enough trouble to keep things interesting.

If you haven’t watched it yet, I think now might be the time.
