I drove up to the gate at Avontuur slowly, reluctantly, taking in the iceberg roses and white paddocks, knowing this was the last time I would arrive like this.
Inside, I was held by the people who have stood beside me for years. Not colleagues. People woven into my life.
In the kitchen stood the women I worked alongside for nearly two decades. I watched them grow into strong, remarkable women. I saw them fall in love, become mothers, face heartbreak, and rise again. These are the same women who sang me into my wedding. That kind of love stays with you.
Mel and I shared one last meal and remembered it all.
I walked the land in gratitude, down to the dam, where I was given four porcupine quills as a farewell.
My son was 18 months old when we began. He is now 25.
Thank you to everyone who stood with us.
22 years of my life. 24 years of the restaurant.
Saying goodbye to something like this carries weight, it wasn't just a journey. It was an adventure.
