No this is NOT a snake - it is a legless skink! Often confused with their serpent relatives, Legless Skinks are of the genus Acontias and are in fact lizards and not snakes.

There are around 30 species in southern Africa, of which the most common are the Cape Legless Skink (Acontias meleagris), the Giant Legless Skink (Acontias plumbeus) and the Thin-tailed Legless Skink (Acontias gracilicauda).

These skinks spend most of their lives underground, using the enlarged and hardened rostral (nose) scale to push earth and leaf litter.
Often after heavy rains, Legless Skinks will come to the surface, moving slowly and awkwardly. They are very vulnerable at this point and often predated on. I found this one trying to cross the H7 and truly struggling. It is clear that they do not have the same muscular movement over the ground that snakes have. Interesting white colouring around his neck too.

Did you know? The Nile monitor lizard is the largest lizard in Africa. Rock monitor lizards are a bit shorter and stockier but with a longer tail. They can use their tails as oars when swimming and whips in self-defence. Monitor lizards shed in patches every 4–6 weeks, rather than in one piece as snakes do.

Het jy geweet? Die water / nyllikkewaan is die grootste akkedis wat in Afrika voorkom met sy nefie die veldlikkewaan net bietjie kleiner en stewiger maar met 'n langer stert. Likkewane kan hulle sterte gebruik om te roei as hulle swem of soos 'n sweep om hulself teen gevaar te verdedig. Likkewane vervel in kleiner stukkies oor hulle vel elke 4 - 6 weke en nie in een stuk soos lange maak nie.

'n Klomp fluffy tieners in die Orpen omgewing. Daar was tien in totaal maar hulle wou nie poseer vir 'n groepfoto nie. Ons het verlede jaar, dieselfde tyd op dieselfde pad 'n pa en ma met 10 babatjies gekry - hulle wou toe ook nie instem vir 'n groepfoto nie. Wonder tog of dit dieselfde gesinnetjie kon wees?
