Wishing you all a safe and happy Easter weekend 2026 from Kruger's own "Easter Bunny" 🐇

Night drives in the far north of the Kruger always carry a sense of mystery. The mopane woodland around Punda Maria changes completely after sunset, and the spotlight often reveals creatures that many visitors never see during the day.

Springhares spend most of their lives underground in burrow systems that they dig in sandy soils across southern Africa. They emerge after dark to feed on roots, grasses, and tubers, rarely needing to drink water because they obtain moisture from their food. Sightings like this are always brief, but they are unforgettable, especially when the night bush is alive with sound.

As this one disappeared back into the darkness, the northern Kruger soundtrack continued around us. The fiery necked nightjar called repeatedly from the roadside, while Peter’s epauletted fruit bats passed overhead, their constant chatter echoing through the warm summer air. These sounds are the heartbeat of the Kruger after sunset.

📸 SAFARI LIFE MOMENT: Midnight Acrobat of the Kruger 🌙🐇✨

The spotlight swung across the sand road during a SANParks night drive from Punda Maria when a small shape suddenly bounded across the track.

A Springhare.

Also known as the springhaas, this remarkable animal looks like a miniature kangaroo of the African bush. With powerful hind legs and a long balancing tail it can leap more than two metres in a single bound to escape predators. Despite the name, it is not a hare at all, but a unique rodent called Pedetes capensis that lives almost entirely at night.

As we watched it pause briefly before disappearing into the darkness, the bush came alive with the haunting call of a fiery necked nightjar and the distant chatter of Peter’s epauletted fruit bats on a warm northern Kruger evening.

Spotted Eagle Owl at the Dullstroom Bird of Prey Rehabilitation Centre. 🦉

They do incredible work here, and really worth the visit in support of wildlife rehab and nature conservation efforts. Their aim is to release all rehabilitated birds back into the wild, in their respective natural habitats. 🖤

Spotted Eagle Owls are completely silent, nocturnal hunters, that have incredible night eyesight. They are known for their prominent ear tufts (used for camouflage - not actually for hearing). They mate for life, i.e. they are monogamous. Their earie but distinctive calls (the male hoots "Hooo hooopoooo," female answers with "Hooo hoo hooo"), and their ability to rotate their heads 270 degrees due to extra neck vertebrae, make them so unique. They hunt insects, small mammals, and reptiles; often perching on streetlights and roosting camouflaged during the day. They love thunderstorms, and it is not un usual to see them bathing and "having fun" in daylight in the rain. 🐾

The Dullstroom Bird Of Prey and Rehabilitation Centre 🦅 was established in 1997 and has been located at its present site since November 2004. 📍

I have been fortunate enough to visit this wildlife sanctuary, since December 2004, and have always managed to have close up views and find out more of 2 of my most-loved bird of prey species; the Long-crested Eagle, and my all-time favourite raptor; the Jackal Buzzard. 🫶

The Centre’s original aim was as an educational centre 🎓 teaching members of the public about raptors and promoting an awareness of the raptor species and their plight as a growing endangered species. The need for care of injured and orphaned birds of prey prescribed the evolving of the rehabilitation centre as well. 🦉

What is so incredible, is that the Dullstroom Bird of Prey Centre, does their utmost to rehabilitate and release every raptor back into their natural wilderness habitat. Obviously, we do not live in a "perfect" World, and some birds cannot be released due to: Permanent Physical Impairment, Human Imprinting, Lack of Survival Skills, Chronic Illness, and against regulations (Such as releasing the pictured Harris's Hawk back into an environment where they never naturally occurred). 🐾

We had beautiful "Birding Christmas", 🦅 hosted by Steph and her family at Trout River Falls , roughly half way between Dullstroom and Mashishing (formerly Lydenburg). 🖤

🇿🇦 Night Visitor at Sirheni 🐾

The stillness of the night at Sirheni Bushveld Camp was suddenly broken by the rustle of quills as a Porcupine ambled into view. Under the soft glow of my bungalow light, I watched this remarkable creature, known locally as the Ystervark, move with calm confidence.

The Cape Crested Porcupine is the largest rodent in Africa and can weigh over 20 kilograms. Their quills are hollow and when threatened they stamp their feet, rattle their quills, and even charge backwards to drive them into predators. They are mostly nocturnal and can live in monogamous pairs, often using burrows or caves for shelter. Seeing one in the camp reminded me why I love the wild accommodation of Kruger.

🇿🇦 Tiny New Life on the Timbavati 🐾

Along the Timbavati River Road, S39, in mid-November 2023, a mother Impala guided her just two-day-old calf through the golden morning light. The little one wobbled on delicate legs, ears flicking and eyes wide, discovering the vastness of the Kruger bush for the very first time.

After 25 years of visiting the park, this was the youngest Impala I had ever seen. Moments like this remind me why I return year after year, to witness the fragile, fleeting miracles of life in the wild.

🇿🇦 Lion Cub Wonder at Klopperfontein Dam 🐾

On the S61, at the dry Klopperfontein Dam south of Baobab Hill near Punda Maria, a young lion cub, barely 6-9 months old, paused in the golden lowveld light. This little one, alongside its three siblings, watched intently as their mother prepared to take down a young buffalo calf, a moment of raw bush life captured in perfect stillness. Seeing lion cubs like this reminds me of the fragility of wildlife in the northern Kruger. Soon, sightings north of Shingwedzi may become almost non-existent, as poaching and limited SANParks action have driven these populations dangerously low. It is a sobering reflection, but it strengthens my passion for documenting and conserving the wilderness I have loved since I laid my eyes upon it.

🇿🇦 Dwarf Mongoose Majesty 🐾

On the S106, the Rabelais Loop near Orpen Rest Camp, a dwarf mongoose perched atop a mound, sitting perfectly still as if posing for the camera. The golden light of the lowveld caught every detail, making this one of my favourite dwarf mongoose photo sequences I have ever captured.

Dwarf mongooses are fascinating social creatures, living in tight-knit groups of up to 30 individuals. They are diurnal, highly alert, and rely on sentinel behaviour to watch for predators while the rest forage. Their diet consists of insects, small reptiles, and occasionally fruit, and they are known for their remarkable teamwork and cooperative care of young. Observing this little sentinel made me reflect on the intricacy of life in the bush.

🇿🇦 Blue Wildebeest Gathering 🐾

Along the H4-2 near Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp, the resident Blue Wildebeest congregate in large herds alongside Burchell’s Zebra, Impala, and the occasional giraffe. Their collective movement, dust swirling beneath the sun, is a rhythm of the lowveld that never fails to capture the essence of the Greater Kruger.

Many visitors often assume that Blue Wildebeest are not intelligent, but much of this behaviour is caused by the Bot Fly laying its eggs in their brains. The larvae literally consume parts of the brain, causing strange and erratic behaviour. Witnessing this herding up close is a reminder of how wildlife adapts and struggles to survive in a harsh environment.

🇿🇦 Bushpig on Nyala Road 🐾

In 2005 my father captured a rare photograph of a Bushpig on the dry S64, deep in the Pafuri region of the Kruger. The road, known as Nyala Road, has always held a special mystery, where dense thickets seem to hide more than they reveal.

Since then I spend hours along this short stretch every time I return to Pafuri, hoping to glimpse the elusive Bushpig again, along with Suni and Red Duiker that move quietly through the shadows.
