Wishing you all a safe and happy Easter weekend 2026 from Kruger's own "Easter Bunny" π
Night drives in the far north of the Kruger always carry a sense of mystery. The mopane woodland around Punda Maria changes completely after sunset, and the spotlight often reveals creatures that many visitors never see during the day.
Springhares spend most of their lives underground in burrow systems that they dig in sandy soils across southern Africa. They emerge after dark to feed on roots, grasses, and tubers, rarely needing to drink water because they obtain moisture from their food. Sightings like this are always brief, but they are unforgettable, especially when the night bush is alive with sound.
As this one disappeared back into the darkness, the northern Kruger soundtrack continued around us. The fiery necked nightjar called repeatedly from the roadside, while Peterβs epauletted fruit bats passed overhead, their constant chatter echoing through the warm summer air. These sounds are the heartbeat of the Kruger after sunset.
