Photographing Hippo is not easy task, but its a fun one for sure. If you know Hippo, they can lay in the water or stand outside a dam doing nothing for hours.

I have had so many Hippo in my camera sight over the years that waited for that split second for me to look down and fidget with my camera and then to decide its the perfect moment for that massive yawn or lunging attack 😂

I know this is relatable and you probably also have some epic stories of that moment you missed! Let me know please, love a good laugh.

One of my favourite ways to pass the time and get my mind off things is to visit Sunset Dam just a few hundred meters from Lower Sabie camp itself.

It really is a great spot to go and chill out while peacefully gazing across the water. There is almost always something going on here, sure, sometimes you need to pay the toll with a couple of hours spent for no meaningful yield - but we all need to pay to play right 🤪

During the day the pod of Hippo are almost always there, but seldomly active. If you can get up and get here super early just at sunrise, or late in the day just before gate closing time - you often see a show as that is when these beasts start to hustle!

This is a Black Backed Jackal I filmed in January this year in the Crocodile Bridge area.

Love these little troublemakers and their eyes are always scanning for the next mission.

Very tricky to photograph, they move very fast and they are small so you lose them in the grasses very quickly.

King of the Skies

Found this Martial Eagle around Pretoriuskop area a while ago, perched with a Hare in its claws.

This was late afternoon as you can see from the densely saturated hues of yellow and orange.

I left it there when gate time rolled around and found it sitting in the same postion with the Hare still (somewhat) intact the next morning.

The more I think about it the more it fascinates me that it spent the whole night there.

I recently visited Glen and Liesl from

They are REAL South African hospitality masters and they take great pride in ensuring you have a truly memorable experience.

Marloth Park is about 10mins away from the Crododile Bridge entry gate and about 30mins from the Malelane entrance into Kruger. Marloth is an experience on its own with a variety of free roaming game as well.

Their prime offering “Bush to Beach” is really something special and if you are looking for the ultimate African experience few things can top this.

The trip takes you all the way up to the furthest northern point of Kruger in Pafuri and all the way back South to Marloth and then its off to Mozambique for some scuba diving and beach lounging.

You don’t need to be qualified at scuba to go either, a resort course is available on site where you can do a short course and participate in diving on the trip.

All the way up North in Kruger, walking trails, game drives, braais, sand, ocean, diving. I’m super excited about this one and it so cool to know their are people like Glen and Liesl out there that have the experience and knowledge and can be trusted with your memories.

Always amazes me that animals have an instinctive awareness regarding the dangers lurking in the shallows.

Watch how cautiously these young Kudu go to drink, always aware, always vigilant and expecting a surprise. (Almost always 😀).

You can also see the little Oxpecker birds working feverishly on them, scavenging for ticks and lice.
