Meet the Blesbok 🦌

That striking white blaze running down the face — giving them their name, "bles" meaning "blaze" in Afrikaans — is one of the easiest ways to identify this antelope. Both males and females carry those ridged, lyre-shaped horns, though the males' tend to be slightly thicker at the base.

Blesbok are endemic to South Africa, meaning they're found nowhere else on Earth in the wild. They were hunted to near extinction in the late 1800s, with numbers dropping drastically before conservation efforts on private and protected land brought them back from the brink — today there are well over 200,000, making them one of South Africa's real conservation success stories.

They're highly social grazers, usually found in herds on open grassland, and rely on strong eyesight rather than scent to spot danger across the plains.

Ostriches silhouetted against a burning Rietvlei sky 🔥

As the world's largest living bird, ostriches can't fly — but they don't need to. Those long, powerful legs make them the fastest running bird on the planet, reaching speeds of up to 70km/h and covering up to 5 metres in a single stride. That speed, combined with a powerful kick, is their main defence against predators.

Ostriches are also unusual among birds for having just two toes on each foot (most birds have three or four), an adaptation that helps with running efficiency on open ground. And despite the popular myth, they don't actually bury their heads in sand — that idea likely comes from them lowering their necks flat to the ground to look less visible when danger is near.

Meet the Marsh Owl 🦉Unlike most owls, the Marsh Owl is often active during the day, especially in the late afternoon and early evening — perfect for catching that low golden light.

They favour open grassland and vlei habitat, perching low on shrubs or stumps rather than high up in trees, which makes sightings like this one possible.

Their dark eyes (rather than the yellow or orange of many other owl species) and round, buffy facial disc help distinguish them from similar grassland raptors. They hunt small rodents, insects and birds by quartering low over the grass, relying on keen hearing to pinpoint prey moving beneath the vegetation.

Marsh Owls are considered near-threatened in parts of their range, largely due to loss of wetland and grassland habitat — so protected spaces like Rietvlei matter more than ever.

A Southern White Rhino, walking through golden grass at sunset.

White rhinos are actually grey — the name likely comes from a mistranslation of the Afrikaans "wyd" (wide), referring to their broad, square lips built for grazing grass, unlike the hook-lipped black rhino, which browses on leaves and shrubs. That wide mouth is one of the easiest ways to tell the two species apart in the field.

They're also the most social of the rhino species, often found in small groups called "crashes," and despite weighing up to 2,300kg, they can run at speeds of over 40km/h when they need to.

Southern White Rhinos were once pushed to near extinction, with numbers dropping to under 100 individuals in the early 1900s. Decades of conservation work have brought the population back to an estimated 16,000+ today — though they remain Near Threatened, still under serious pressure from poaching.

Meet the Little Grebe 🔎

That splash of chestnut on the neck and the bright yellow patch at the base of the bill are breeding-season features — outside of breeding, Little Grebes look far duller and browner. They're one of the smallest waterbirds you'll find on our dams and wetlands, and despite the size, they're excellent divers, disappearing underwater for several seconds at a time to hunt small fish, insects and aquatic invertebrates.

Look closely and you'll notice they don't have webbed feet like ducks — instead, each toe has its own lobed flap, which helps them paddle and dive with precision.

Quietly watching the world go by 🐒 The vervet monkey is one of the most familiar primates in the African bush.

Highly social and remarkably intelligent, vervets live in organised troops and use a variety of calls to communicate with one another — including different alarm calls when danger is nearby.

A splash of colour in the African bush 🌈 The Lilac-breasted Roller is one of Southern Africa’s most recognisable birds, famous for its incredible mix of lilac, turquoise, blue, green and brown feathers.

Despite their colourful appearance, these birds are skilled hunters. They often perch on exposed branches, scanning the ground for insects and other small prey before swooping down to catch them. Their name “roller” comes from the impressive rolling and diving displays they perform during flight.
