White rhinos are actually grey โ the name likely comes from a mistranslation of the Afrikaans "wyd" (wide), referring to their broad, square lips built for grazing grass, unlike the hook-lipped black rhino, which browses on leaves and shrubs. That wide mouth is one of the easiest ways to tell the two species apart in the field.
They're also the most social of the rhino species, often found in small groups called "crashes," and despite weighing up to 2,300kg, they can run at speeds of over 40km/h when they need to.
Southern White Rhinos were once pushed to near extinction, with numbers dropping to under 100 individuals in the early 1900s. Decades of conservation work have brought the population back to an estimated 16,000+ today โ though they remain Near Threatened, still under serious pressure from poaching.
