Complaint Regarding the Lack of Recognition and Credit for Local Sports Photographers in South Africa

I wish to express my concern regarding the ongoing lack of recognition and proper credit given to local sports photographers who dedicate their time, resources, and talent to documenting community and amateur sporting events across South Africa.
Local photographers play an essential role in promoting sport at grassroots level. Through photography, we preserve memorable moments, increase the visibility of players and teams, assist clubs with marketing, and create lasting records of community sporting achievements. Despite these valuable contributions, many sports organizations regularly use or benefit from photographs without acknowledging the photographers responsible for capturing them.
Many photographers invest thousands of rand in professional cameras, lenses, computers, editing software, transport, and internet services. We also spend countless hours attending matches, editing images, and sharing content that helps promote competitions and organizations. Unfortunately, these efforts often go unnoticed, with images being reposted, shared, or published without proper credit or permission.
Recognizing photographers is not simply about appreciation—it is about respecting creative work and intellectual property. A simple photo credit, photographer accreditation, or inclusion in official media communications demonstrates professionalism and encourages continued investment in community sports coverage.
I therefore urge sports organizations across South Africa to adopt clear media policies that:
Credit photographers whenever their images are used.
Seek permission before reproducing photographs.
Include local photographers as valued members of event media teams.
Create fair opportunities for collaboration and professional development.
Recognize the contribution of photographers during tournaments and sporting events.
Supporting local photographers ultimately benefits the entire sporting community. When photographers feel respected and appreciated, they are more motivated to continue producing high-quality content that promotes athletes, clubs, sponsors, and the growth of sport in our communities.
I hope this concern will be taken seriously and that meaningful steps will be taken to ensure local sports photographers receive the recognition and respect they have earned through their dedication and hard work.
