The importance of taking pictures. Last week we celebrated my baby brother’s 20th birthday. Shortly before, I created the opportunity to take his portrait with our lovely German Shepherds. I’ve been blessed that I’ve been able to take his portrait for a long time, creating a memory box for him, our parents, and his future family.
Today my big brother would’ve been 35 years old. I never had the opportunity to formally take his portrait and that will remain one of the biggest regrets of my life. Even so, these candid pictures are priceless, and no amount of money can replace them.
Your loved ones won’t be around forever. In everyday living, we often forget how fleeting this life is. Some are blessed with a long and healthy life; others bring joy and love for a short while before they leave this earth. And when that happens, we look for pictures to keep their memory alive, because the truth is memories start to slip. You forget what their voice sounds like, the intonation of their laugh, the sound of their stride as they walk. Pictures are all that we are left with.
Taking my friends and family’s portraits is one of the biggest gifts I can give to them and to their other loved ones. Taking your portrait is not just about you, it’s about the people we leave behind. Don’t wait until you lose the extra weight; don’t wait until you have the perfect outfit; don’t wait until your skin clears up; don’t wait until you go on the “insta-worthy” holiday. You are here now, tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.
