Saddle-billed Stork (Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis)
Interesting Facts:
• This large wading bird is the tallest stork in the world, standing up to five feet tall. 
• The species is a resident breeder across sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa, where it is considered endangered. 
• The bird is often found in protected areas such as the Kruger National Park, typically along larger rivers. 
• The female can be distinguished from the male by her yellow eye, while the male has dark-brown eyes.

Interesting Fact: Buffaloes are inherently social animals and are often found in large herds, especially during the dry season when resources are scarcer. Herds can consist of a few dozen to several thousand members. Within these herds, a dominant female, known as the matriarch, plays the main role in leading the group.

Mature males typically occupy dominant positions within the herd. These males compete for mating rights. Their status is determined by factors such as size, strength, and age. Younger males often form bachelor groups until they are strong enough to challenge for a position within the main herd.

Interesting Fact: Waterbuck have another special trick which helps them in the water, they are able to release an oil over their hair repelling water and keeping its coat dry.
This oil has a really bad smell, so if the water does not keep the predators at bay the Waterbuck’s odor certainly should. In fact, it was believed for many years that because the smell was so bad that the meat also did not taste good, a perfect predator deterrent. However, the contrary has been proven many times over as there have been numerous sightings of lions, hyena and even leopard feasting on these hairy, smelly buck.

Interesting Fact: Portrayed as the most seldom seen, leopards are actually the most widely distributed African big cat. They can be found in a variety of habitats ranging from desert country to equatorial forests, high mountains to coasts. Interesting Fact: The social structure of African savannah elephants, especially the female ones, is one of the most complex in the animal kingdom.

Elephant cows and their youngsters typically form herds of about 10 individuals, each led by a matriarch which is usually the oldest female.

Several distantly related or familiar herds can in turn form communities of up to about 70 animal which alternately come together and separate.

If several different communities meet, it is called a clan meeting. This can include hundreds of elephants.

Herds and communities are characterized by a linear hierarchy – defined by the experience, size and social competence of each female - as well as by mutual support, protection from enemies and information exchange. If the mother of a calf dies, other females take care of it.

Interesting Fact: The Lilac Breasted Roller will perch on a dead tree, surveying the area for prey. One typical aspect of its behavior is that it also preys on animals fleeing from bush fires. It is a swift flier, indulging in acrobatics during the breeding season. Lilac Breasted Rollers actually breed ‘on the wing’.

They live in pairs or small groups, but are often seen alone. Their call is a loud harsh squawk, ‘zaaak’. They are partly migratory, but in some areas they are sedentary. To feed they swoop down from an elevated perch next to their prey and eat it on the ground or return to a perch where they batter it before swallowing it whole.

They are territorial, also defending temporarily small feeding territories; hence individuals are regularly spaced along roads. They drive off many species from near their nest hole, even after breeding.

Interesting Fact: Buffalo have to constantly manage the external parasites on their bodies. This is done by wallowing in the mud to kill off ticks and other parasites on their skin. They also have a secret weapon to help keep them clean. They allow oxpecker birds to eat the ticks on their legs, tails, backs, inside their ears and even inside their noses!
