It’s been a while since I last went out with my camera.

Since moving to South Africa, winter sunsets have become my absolute favourite, and this photograph is a perfect example of why. It’s also a reminder that sometimes being in the right place at the right time can create truly unforgettable moments.

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would capture such a beautiful scene, with an elephant crossing the landscape beneath the moon and surrounded by the soft colours of an African winter sunset.

Small moments matter just as much as the big sightings… and proves it every time.

I spent 10 minutes quietly watching this tiny bush Karoo rat going about its day, feeding on fruits, grooming, and moving through the bush with so much character. These little guys are the only rodents in Southern Africa known to build large oval “lodges” at the base of shrubs using sticks, twigs, and grass.

It’s a reminder that incredible wildlife stories aren’t only about the giants. Sometimes, they’re right at your feet.

never disappoints. From the smallest moments to the biggest sightings, there’s always something happening.

This Saturday was all about baboons, kudus, and buffalo. But the real highlight was this playful young baboon. He kept jumping up and down on a branch, completely in his own world… until he noticed me. For a second, it felt like he was about to say hello, then went right back to his game until the branch finally snapped and he ran off to join the rest of the troop.

Cloudy days like this are perfect for watching natural behaviour. Feeding, grooming, small fights, and endless interaction. This is the kind of wildlife storytelling that makes every visit unique.

I had never photographed a Red-faced Mousebird before, and spotting this one in was such a special surprise. With its soft grey plumage, bright red face and that dramatic long tail, it is one of the most unique birds you can find in the Eastern Cape.

Red-faced Mousebirds are often overlooked in wildlife photography, but they have incredible character and behaviour, including the ability to hang upside down while feeding and conserve energy through torpor at night.

Addo never disappoints when it comes to bird photography in South Africa. From elephants to small feathered gems like this, every drive is a new discovery.

Hyenas are often labelled as part of the Ugly 5, but despite what many people think, they are not just scavengers. Spotted hyenas are highly intelligent, social predators and incredibly efficient hunters.

In fact, spotted hyenas have a hunting success rate of around 60 to 70 percent, which is higher than many other large African predators. They work as a coordinated clan, using strategy, stamina and communication to bring down their prey.

These two young spotted hyena pups were not too impressed with our presence. After carefully inspecting our safari vehicle and tyres, they calmly returned to their den to wait for breakfast.

One of the things I love most about wildlife photography is the constant growth. Every time I head out into nature, I learn something new about light, patience and animal behaviour.

This Grey Heron reflection shot was one of my dream bird photography moments. That calm water mirror effect I had visualised for so long.

Is it perfect? No.
Can it improve? Always.

But progress in nature photography is about showing up again and again until everything aligns.

Living in South Africa for nearly six years, sparked my love for birdwatching and bird photography.
