හෝර්ටන් තැන්නට යන ගමනේදී අප පසුපසින් ආ සුනඛයා...
කැලයක් ඇතුලට ගිය සුනඛයෙකු දඩයම් කිරීමට දිවියෙකු උත්සාහ කිරීමේ සිද්ධියක් පසුගියදා ජාතික වනෝද්යානයකින් වාර්තා විය. නමුත් ඉන් බල්ලා දිවි ගලවා ගත් අතර, එය වූ ආකාරය පිළිබඳ විවිධ මතයන් හා විවාදයන් ඇති විය.
වනජීවී ඡායාරූප ශිල්පියෙකු සහ මෙම උද්යානවලට නිතර පැමිණෙන අයෙකු වශයෙන්, මට මේ කාරණය සම්බන්ධයෙන් මගේම අදහස් කීපයක් මෙසේ දක්වන්නට කැමැතියි.
සති කිහිපයකට පෙර හෝර්ටන් තැන්න ජාතික වනෝද්යානයට අප ගිය ගමනකදී, අපි ආහාර වේලක් ගැනීමට පටිටිපොල ස්තානයකදී නැවතුනු අතර, එහිදී සුනඛයෙකු අපි ලගට පැමිණියේය. එහිදී අප ආහාර ස්වල්පයක් සුනඛයාටද ලබා දුනි. පුදුමයට කරුණක් නම්, අපි උද්යානය දෙසට ගමන් කරන විට, මෙම සුනඛයා අපේ වාහනය පසුපසින් පැමිණ කිලෝමීටර් 15 ක ගමනක් අප සමඟ සිටිමින්, උද්යානයට පවා ඇතුළු වීමයි. සුනඛයින් කෙටි දුරක් පසුපස හඹා යන බව මම දැක ඇත්තෙමි, නමුත් කිසි විටෙකත් මෙවැනි දුරක් එනවා නම් දැක නැත. සුනඛයින් වනාහි මිනිස්සුන්ට ඉතාම ලෙන්ගතු සත්ව කොට්ඨාශයකි. මෙම අත්දැකීමද මට පෙන්වා දුන්නේ සුනඛයින් කෙතරම් අනුවර්තනය විය හැකි සහ ලෙන්ගතු විය හැකි සතුන්ද යන්නයි. එහි සිටි සමහර අයගේ තර්කයක් වුයේ, දිවියන් පෙන්වීමට සුනඛයින් bait එකක් කර ගැනීමට සුනඛයා හිතාමතාම වනෝද්යානයට ගෙන ඇවිත් ඇති බවය. මා නම් එය විශ්වාස කරන්නේ නැත. මන්ද safari රියදුරු මහතුන් දක්ශ සහ මනා පළපුරුදු බවක් ඇති අය නිසා එසේ කිරීමට කිසිදු අවශ්යතාවයක් නොමැති නිසා.
ඇත්තෙන්ම සැබෑ ආශ්චර්යමත් දෙය නම් දිවියෙකුගේ ග්රහණයට හසු නොවී බල්ලා දිවි ගලවා ගැනීමයි. දිවියන් ආහාර දාමයේ ඉහළින්ම සිටී, වේගවත් හා බලවත් දඩයම් කරන්නන් වේ. එමනිසා මේ බල්ලා නිරුපද්රිතව බේරීම ඉතාම වාසනාවන්ත දෙයක් විය.
මෙම සිදුවීම අපට ස්වභාවධර්මයේ අනපේක්ෂිත බව සහ ගෘහාශ්රිත සතුන්ගේ විශිෂ්ට සහජ බුද්ධිය සිහිපත් කරයි...
Story of the Dog That Followed Us
A recent viral incident from a national park has sparked widespread debate. A leopard, one of nature’s apex predators, attempted to hunt a dog that somehow found its way deep into the wild. Remarkably, the dog survived the attack, raising questions about how it ended up in the jungle in the first place. While an investigation is underway, subject matter experts have shared varying opinions. As a wildlife photographer and regular visitor to these parks, I have my own thoughts on this matter.
I want to approach this from a different angle, drawing from a personal experience that still amazes me. A few weeks ago, during a trip to Horton Plains National Park near Pattipola, we made a brief stop to eat before entering the park. There, a friendly dog approached us, and we shared some food with it. Little did we know that this encounter was just the beginning of an incredible story.
As we resumed our journey, traffic moved slowly due to the long weekend crowd. To our surprise, the dog began following our vehicle, weaving through the cars. What astonished us even more was that it didn’t stop at the park entrance—it continued to follow us inside, through the entire hike. That’s more than 15 kilometers! I’ve seen dogs follow people for short distances, but never this far.
The experience made me realize just how determined and adaptable dogs can be. They’re hardwired to be loyal and curious, traits that have been part of their evolution alongside humans. This brings me back to the viral incident. Some have suggested that the dog may have been deliberately brought into the national park, but I find that hard to believe. National park authorities, safari drivers, and trackers are highly experienced and vigilant when it comes to wildlife management.
What’s truly miraculous is that the dog survived a leopard encounter. Leopards are at the top of the food chain, swift and powerful hunters. The fact that this dog escaped unharmed is nothing short of extraordinary.
This incident reminds us of nature’s unpredictability and the remarkable instincts of animals—both wild and domesticated. Perhaps the dog’s survival was pure luck, or maybe it was a testament to its resilience and will to live. Either way, it’s a story that will remain etched in wildlife history.
