Hi, Joy Mzolo here
I was born and raised in the city of Pietermaritzburg ,Boughton . Since birth I’ve been diagnosed with a rare condition known as ,”brittle bone disease” , this just means that my bones are fragile and can break easily. I was given ten days to live ,but since then this girl has been on a mission to change the stigma of disabled people through my photography.
My love for photography began when I was younger , I was wildly inspired by friends and family behind the camera ,also buttons were kind of intriguing . I received my first camera in 2017 , at first, photography courses seemed really daunting to me until later on I learnt about them through reading about camera’s from books at the thrift store. After much practice, I grew to love portrait photography and was stuck on that for a while until time passed and I began to become more confident in other areas of photography, these include - fashion photography, family portraits, product shoots and maternity shoots .
Photography has helped me become more stronger mentally and physically by showcasing my creativity through the lens ,making me more confident about my capabilities. My photography is mostly inspired by my childhood and surroundings, from playing with grasshoppers and being surrounded by trees and only being a drive away from the botanical gardens. Earthy tones has stayed true to me throughout my life. Flowers are a nostalgic and fond memory of my mom doing flower arrangements at church and weddings...and the sun? well , who doesn’t love the sun .
My mission through photography is to inspire disabled people that life isn’t over ,there can be challenges throughout life but the love for art makes us stronger .It also means to me that people get to come to me, lay out a vision and I get to bring it to life, which I think is magic. Everyone should have the freedom to see themselves through the right lighting and from the genius behind the lens.
Love and light,
Joy x
