I was very fortunate to join a black rhino conservation event at Dinokeng Game Reserve yesterday.

We really do take for granted the hard work, risk, and effort that goes into protecting these amazing animals and the dedicated men and women who spend their days doing this.

It is not as glamourous as it may seem. Spending hours in the bush with little protection from the harsh sun. Marching through the thick bush over rocks and thorns with the potential of danger everywhere. At the end of the day physically exhausted and covered in a thick layer of dust and sweat.

The dedication and knowledge that goes into a day like this is phenominal. Pilots, veterinarians, rangers, technicians and the ground crew all working together. A chain of people, and if one link is missing the entire operation will fail.

In the city we are so far removed from these conservation efforts that we often do not even think about it. But to be part of the action yesterday was definitely an eye opener and reminder that we need to all do more to protect our wildlife.
