Today I spent a rather humbling moment being inspected by this gentle giant.
Let’s just say my heart rate picked up a little! While I thought I was watching him, he was definitely watching me.

A lone African penguin was recently spotted swimming just offshore at Hartenbos, far from the colonies where these endangered birds are normally found. Watching this little traveller navigating the waves was both beautiful and concerning — a reminder of how unpredictable life at sea can be for our coastal wildlife. Hopefully, this adventurous penguin finds its way back to safety soon. 💙

A Day I’ll Never Forget

I still remember the day this pangolin was rescued and released.

It was a day filled with conflicting emotions.

Anger that the rescue was necessary in the first place. No wild animal should ever have to experience the cruelty of illegal wildlife trafficking.

Relief that freedom was finally within reach. Watching this incredible creature take its first steps back into the wild was a privilege I’ll never forget.

But there was also apprehension.

As the cage was cut open, I couldn’t help but wonder what lay ahead. Would it survive? Would it find food? Would it avoid the dangers that had brought it here in the first place?

A rescue isn’t the end of the story—it’s the beginning of another chapter.
