After a travel story, I usually end up with a folder of photos labeled "On the road". Moments while driving, picnic tables next to the road, craft stalls and view points between towns. Here are some of those stops on the Panorama Route in Mpumalanga.

1. Driving to Sabie from Nelspruit
2. Abel Erasmus Pass and JG Strijdom Tunnel
3. A lookout point outside Sabie
4. Craft stall outside Graskop
5. Robbers Pass & a Formosa Lily (Lilium formasnum) outside Graskop.

Steve and Lulu Black on Balam River Deck - their coffee shop on the Umzimkhulu river outside Underberg.

At Khotso Lodge and Horse Trails, Steve and Lulu offer horse riding and hiking in the Southern Drakensberg and into Lesotho. Steve is 70 years old and he’s a legend in endurance sport circles: He has nine gold medals in the Dusi Canoe Marathon, 11 silver Comrades Marathon medals; he won the 120 km Lesotho Wild Run in 2012 and still holds the course record; he won the 270 km Wild Coast Ultra Marathon twice and the 85 km MUTTER trail run in the Southern Drakensberg six times. Last year, at the age of 69, he came second.

“The young bucks are a little bit stronger than me now,” he says with a smile.
