Today’s mission: find all three pheasant species on the island.

I think this male Lady Amherst’s Pheasant wins on style alone.

But the surprising part is the location… any guesses where I am?

Northern Rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes moseleyi)

While on our Cape to Cape crossing from Antarctica to South Africa we made a stop at the one of the remotest inhabited islands in the world, Tristan da Cunha. One of our main targets was the rare Northern Rockhopper penguin and after a 30 minute walk we managed to find one individual calmly resting on the pebbled beach of the Atlantic ocean. What a pleasure it was to observe another species of penguin in its natural habitat in one of the most difficult islands to land on. A great memory from 2023 and one that I will keep forever.

Tristan Albatross

Wings outstretched, soaring effortlessly across the South Atlantic, this majestic Tristan Albatross is a sight to behold. Critically endangered, with a population of just a few hundred individuals, every glimpse of this bird is a privilege. As it rides the wind currents with ease, its snow-white plumage glistens in the sunlight, a true marvel of evolution. Capturing this fleeting moment, I felt humbled by the beauty and fragility of life on our planet.

While packing up the car after a wonderful diving trip in Sodwana, South Africa, we spotted the Narina Trogon perched on a nearby tree which finally showed itself after calling all morning. These birds are extremely difficult to spot as they live high up in the canopy rarely coming down. I took advantage of this great opportunity to capture this beautiful bird and the moment.

This young Weddell Seal was definitely a highlight for me today 😍 This little guy must only be a few months old based on the size. These true seals breed on the pack ice in Antarctica where the mother nurses them for 7-8 weeks for it heads out on its own. One day it may grow up to be 3m long and weigh about 500kgs!

I have so many awesome photos of birds from the past few weeks to edit and share when I get a chance but I was too excited about this one to wait.

Robinson Crusoe Island has 2 endemic birds (occur nowhere else) and one of them happens to be a beautiful hummingbird! It is called the Juan Fernandez Firecrown and we managed to locate one individual sitting quietly in a tree, quite unusual for a hummingbird to sit still for long! Eventually it started feeding and then a female arrived and then another male. Trying to photograph these fast flying birds is tough in low light but I managed to capture a few nice shots. I was standing next to Peter Harrison at the time and even he was getting excited about a terrestrial bird! Needless to say it was the perfect end to an absolutely stunning voyage. Next stop is Valparaiso in Chile and then it's off to Antarctica. We do have one more day at sea tomorrow and we are crossing the Humbolt current so here's hoping for some epic seabird action!

Polynesian Storm-Petrel (Nesofregetta fuliginosa) - near Rapa Island.

This is the largest southern storm-petrel overlaps with the similar-sized Titan Storm-petrel which we managed views of but sadly no photos. These amazing birds have an erratic bounding flight with frequent splashes and kick-offs the ocean using their long dangling legs. It is estimated that there are fewer than 2500 individuals left.
