The 10th of August is World Lion Day!
Scientifically known as 'Panthero Leo,' lions are one of the most well-known and popular animal species on planet earth. Since 2002, the lion range has declined by an estimated 36%, and their population has been reduced to ~23,000 individuals across the African continent. The species faces many threats, including poaching, killing in retaliation for livestock predation, targeted poaching for their body parts (e.g. paws and teeth), habitat loss and prey base depletion.
