Salute to a Legend

My social media feed was flooded with tributes to a fallen legend this morning, so I thought I’d connect my hard drive and get to work editing one of my favourite images of this gentle giant, Craig.

Back in March of 2024 I had the privilege of spending about 2 hours with Craig. Alongside two younger bulls, he provided me with great photographic opportunities, and to be honest, images of scenes I doubt I’ll never be able to capture again. And even though many photographers over the years have captured very similar images of him, especially with Mount Kilimanjaro as the backdrop, this image along with many others that I’ve captured during my time with Craig will forever be special to me.

Craig has been an ambassador to all tuskers in the area, and let’s hope that his genes along with the many other great tusker genes survive well into the future.

As much as we want to focus on the eyes of our subject in most scenarios, there are times when the scene presents an opportunity to sway away from the usual “rules” and create a more interesting composition and one which tells a better story.
