Kruger-2-Kalahari

Kruger-2-Kalahari www.kruger-2-kalahari.com is an Wildlife Photography and Photo Safari site owned by real people who

"How do you get such good photographs?", "Which Kruger and Kalahari bungalows have the best views?", “Which Pilanesberg hides are good for photography?”, “Where do we stand the best chance of seeing a leopard in Etosha?”…

These are just some of the questions we get asked. That's because we have been visiting famous African game reserves since 1995 - actually we have spent over 24 months in variou

s Southern and East African wildlife parks! Our favorites are the Kruger National Park, Kalahari (Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park), Pilanesberg, in South Africa and Etosha in Namibia. Kruger-2-Kalahari is owned by Mario & Jenny Fazekas, who during the past 20 years, have spent over 800 days visiting African National Parks such as the Kruger Park, Kgalagadi, and Pilanesberg in South Africa, Etosha in Namibia and Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara in Tanzania. Many of their photographs have been published and they have won a number of photographic contests. They specialise in providing advice on self-drive photo safaris to the Southern African parks of Kruger, Kgalagadi, Pilanesberg and Etosha. They have a wealth of experience that can help make your next African Safari more comfortable and that could help you get better wildlife photographs. The number one problem, challenge or difficulty people on safari face is that their photographs tend to be disappointing. Here is the scenario...

Your Vision: You visit Africa for a once-in-a-lifetime safari and you return home with hundreds of photographs that you are proud to show family and friends. The Reality: You return home with hundreds of boring photographs that you are reluctant to show anyone. You have spent a lot of money on travel and on photographic equipment and you would like to return home with great photographs and not just memories.

You may have noticed that Trevor Barnett, our Kruger Park Photographer's Guide co-author, has not posted for a few days. He's in the Kruger this week, staying at Balule camp. I chatted with him a few minutes ago and his first few days have been slow but today he got all three of the big cats. He photographed this leopard eating an elephant near Balule a few years ago - I wonder what images he's going to come home with this year?!

Marietta Eitner Quinn - you were asking about Talamati bushveld camp. We spent 2 nights there - lots of plains game by day and night - elephants, giraffe, waterbuck, wildebeest, zebra and a few vultures and eagles. On night one a wild dog ran past the waterhole - no chance of images! On night two, the pack of dogs chased an impala into the fence right at the entrance - it was after sunset so a bit dark for images. They dragged if off and had their dinner. We then heard a giant eagle owl calling - Jenny got the torch and went hunting - she found it in a tree with the impala skin!
We heard the lions roaring each night but they were far off. They are in the process of renovating each unit - they currently all face one another so they are 'turning' them to face the riverbed - much better!

There have been a few recent elephant incidents concerning field guides. Yes, there have also been incidents in the past with self drive visitors but trained safari guides should know better.
In both recent incidents a few other field guides raced to these guides' defense, while most other people criticized the implicated guides. Both without knowing all the facts, yet, even when more incriminating video footage was released, especially in the Pilanesberg incident, the other guides still stood up for their colleague. If a person has done wrong, admit it and move on, don't try and make out they are innocent.
We have been on hundreds of guided game drives in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Tanzania. The most drives have been in Madikwe Game Reserve so we used those guides as an example.
Over a 12-month period we experienced 18 field guides at 11 different Madikwe lodges, of which just 5 (28%) were Excellent, while 6 (33%) were Average and 7 (39%) Terrible in terms of working as a team with their guests, finding animals, complying with their clients requests, going the extra mile and the overall safari experience. We have therefore categorized guides in three categories- the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. We are not picking on guides, as this percentage of excellent vs average and horrid, will apply to all industries. The point is, that as a visitor to one our national parks, you are more likely to encounter an average to poor guide, with a 28% chance of having an exceptional guide.

Good and Bad Field Guides - like most things in life you get the good, bad and ugly - here are some of our more memorable stories!

There are some truly amazing wildlife photos in the article! My photo in the piece was a leopard drinking at the Punda Maria waterhole in the Kruger National Park, captured in 2018.
The story behind the photo: we have learnt from our experiences over the past 28 years that most cats tend to drink around dinner time. We have had many dinners interrupted when subjects arrive at the waterholes in Kruger, Etosha, Madikwe, Kgalagadi and Pilanesberg. Hence we take our dinner to the hides - usually something simple like cheese and biscuits with vino.
So we were sitting in the Punda hide since just before sunset, watching elephants and buffaloes coming to drink. Once they leave the waterhole is quiet and the rest of the guests go to their campsites or chalets to start their braais. That leaves Jenny and I in the hide.
We start eating our dinner while keeping an eye on the waterhole and then we see the silent leopard emerge from the shadows. We put the cheese and biscuits away trying to not knock the wine glasses over and start shooting.
The flashes let the campers know there's something happening at the waterhole and the stampede inside the camp starts! The people rush in - fortunately the leopard is chilled - and the guests take their photos and once the leopard leaves they go back to their braais.
Jenny and I remain - you could say we are the sentinels keeping watch while the campers eat their dinners. We stayed 9 nights at Punda Maria and had 7 different leopards come to the waterhole around dinnertime.
