Weekly Tip ( #4) : Draw With Light

The word 'photography' is derived from the Greek words 'photos' - light, and 'graphen' - to draw. All photographs are therefore 'drawing with light'. Just for fun, we actually drew with light!!

This is how we did it:

1. Take a tripod and mount the camera
2. Shoot in full manual mode:
- f/22 (for a wide depth of field)
- 10 second shutter (long enough for you to draw)
- ISO 100 (for best quality)
- Manual focus on distance to subject
- remember to make use of a dark room or area!
- use any source that produces a bright light. This can be done with LED lights, flames, ice-cream sparklers or the flash light on your phone.

This is a very creative way of expressing yourself, and much enjoyment can be derived from it too!!!

Weekly Tip ( #3): Kids' Photography

“Hey kids, please sit down over there, look this way and smile!”

That's how most people instruct their "little models" to pose. This is not natural for the kids, and you won't get the best out of them.

So, next time you go out and photograph kids keep these 3 tips in mind. The photo shoot will flow and everyone will have much more fun – including you!

-Let the kids run and play.
-Be the clown and get the kids to laugh naturally.
-Get down low to their level.

Weekly Tip ( #2): Saving your photographs

Today, with technology becoming greater every second, the use of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB memory cards increases. The need to transfer our photographs to our "PC'S" becomes less relevant, as these cards hold thousands of photographs and video files.
What if your camera got stolen tomorrow, how many photographs would you have lost?

1. Save your photographs to your PC on a frequent basis.
2. Format your memory card.
3. Make regular backups of your hard drive containing your photographs.

Your insurance will cover the loss of equipment, but they will never be able to retrieve your lost memories!

Weekly Tip ( #1): When taking portrait photographs of people

1. Turn camera to portrait angle
2. Step further back
3. Zoom in to crop head and shoulders
4. Open up aperture.

Reason: To create a nice, shallow depth of field. This will help the subject to stand out from its surroundings.
