During 2021 COVID restricted travel, I found myself visiting Tiger Canyon, a controversial conservation project for both Tiger and Cheetah based in the Karoo South Africa. I highly recommend a visit.

It is sad to know what we as humans have done to these animals.. We need to do better.

One of my favourite birds in Africa, the African Fish Eagle. When you hear the call they make, you know you are in a special place. Somehow it creates such tranquility and relaxation. With extremely good eye sight along with powerful talons, they are serious fishing machines.

Misty Gemsbok Sunrise.

One of my favourite mornings at the Kgalagadi in April, we were up early and out the gate as soon as possible. The mist was lurking and the sun was just starting to rise. With some warm tea in a flask, we were looking to find something exciting around the corner. Next thing we see some Gemsbok on the dunes and it couldn’t get more iconic than this for the tradition Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, now Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Mornings like these that make me long for the Kalahari!

Lion Cubs can be rather entertaining, irritating all the adult lionesses. This cub lay down and rolled around a bit on a mound of soil. This was during COVID-19 so the reserve was quiet and we were lucky enough to sit relatively peacefully for some time.

Hours and hours in an overnight hide can be exhausting while patience and staying awake is challenging. However the satisfaction in the reward can be breathtaking. As a few buffalo start to appear out of the darkness, my heart skipped a few beats. Sitting in a underground eye level hide, looking up at a big Buffalo bull less than a meter away gives you an appreciation for the sheer size of this animal. Absolutely Magnificent.

Low angle shots make all of the difference, camera flat on the ground is key. Having a eye level underground hide makes this extremely easy to do.

This is one of those shots that was an absolute scramble to get the shot. I have always wanted to see and photograph Cape Foxes and the opportunities just don’t come around to often for me. Next thing I see 3 Cape Fox Pups cross the road, the one lay down, another ran off and the last looked straight at me. I look back now and wish my settings were slightly different with a faster shutter and slightly smaller aperture, that said, I’m happy with the way this particular sighting turned out. It was definitely a highlight of my trip to the Kgalagadi in 2021.

Following Cheetah while they are on the move can be rather challenging yet very exciting! A mother and 3 young Cheetahs were quickly moving through the long grass most likely on the lookout for something to eat.
