Hornbills are known for their distinctive and often large beaks, which are not only impressive in appearance but also serve various functional and ecological purposes.

The beaks of hornbills are adapted to their feeding habits. Most hornbills are omnivorous and eat a variety of foods, including fruits, insects, small animals, and even small vertebrates. Their bills allow them to capture and manipulate a wide range of prey.

Hornbills play a crucial role in forest ecosystems by aiding in seed dispersal. Many hornbills eat fruits, and as they fly from tree to tree, they deposit seeds in new areas. This helps promote forest regeneration and biodiversity.

Celebrating World Lion Day.

These fantastic predators really do put fear into you when you see them. They look cool, calm and relaxed, but that one time you catch their gaze, it sends shivers down your spine!!

When you come across a pride on a hunt, you really see them in action and the teamwork and focus, is second to none.

We caught these in Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa a few years ago when they were coming up to Batlhako dam. The focus in their eyes as they caught sight of some Impala was amazing.

Seeing a large Elephant heard always brings excitement and intrigue. Watching the young calves and how they interact is always fun.

Baby elephants are incredibly playful and curious. They engage in various activities such as chasing birds, playing in water, and even mock-fighting with each other. Play is essential for their physical and social development.

Calves learn by observing and imitating the behavior of older elephants in the herd. They mimic actions like using their trunks for drinking, eating, and dust-bathing.

These youngsters we found in Kruger National Park, where they were having a ball playing, while crossing the road and trying to keep up with the rest of the herd.

Crested Barbet

These stunning birds are known for their loud and distinctive calls. They have a series of rolling, repetitive notes that sound like "prr-prr-prr-prr" or "trrrrr" and can be heard frequently throughout the day.

They have great personalities and always seem so inquisitive.

They are an important part of the ecosystems they inhabit and add beauty to the African landscapes they call home.

Elusive Caracal!

Once and only once we have found a caracal. The sighting was so memorable I can remember it vividly. We started out on an early morning drive from Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge in Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa and 10 mins into the drive we came around the corner and there it was in the road!

The shock and excitement in the car of seeing this fantastic and beautiful cat was electric. We followed it for approximately a kilometre until we went into a dip in the road. The opportunity for an epic photo presented itself, where the Caracal reached the peak in the road and then stopped and gave us this look.

What an amazing creature and so relaxed.

Caracals are mostly solitary animals and are known for their remarkable jumping ability. They can leap up to 10 feet (3 meters) in the air to catch birds on the wing, making them highly efficient aerial hunters.

When you are lucky enough to have these beautiful birds as daily garden visitors you just have to show off their beauty.

The male white-bellied sunbird is around 11 cm in length. During the breeding season, the male has a white belly and an iridescent throat and back. A metallic purple line is visible in direct sunlight, between the belly and the throat.

The first meeting of Serati!

During our annual holiday in December 2021, we had had a couple of unsuccessful game drives. I decided to go out again on my own following the old adage that time in the park will always succeed.
I headed off to Tlou Drive and on coming up to Fourways Junction, I saw a bunch of parked cars. This always gets the heart going. I pulled up by the end of a game path meeting the road and started looking around.

Within minutes a bunch of Impala started sprinting out of the long grass all around me. After looking forwards, backwards and sideways trying to see what was chasing them, out of the game path pops a leopard, no more than 5 metres from me staring straight at me!!

Finally success, time in the park always wins. After 3 seconds of catching my gaze she walked next to me and stood watching the impala planning her next hunt strategy. Wow, what a beautiful leopard she is and so so relaxed. It was if none of the vehicles were there.

She then shortly after disappeared into the long grass and took another shot at stalking them. After spending 30-40 mins in the vicinity, she came out in different locations 2 or 3 times but was unsuccessful in her hunt.

This was the first meeting with her and over the course of the next 3 days, we had unbelievable sightings each and every day.

Piercing Gaze.

When you lock eyes with baboons you get a sense of closeness and huge intelligence. They are so expressive in their eyes and facial expressions that you can relate to what they are thinking.

Baboons are known for their intelligence and problem-solving abilities. They have excellent memory and can learn complex tasks. They have been observed using tools, such as rocks or sticks, for various purposes like digging or defending themselves.

Baboons have a wide range of vocalizations to communicate with each other. They produce various calls, including barks, grunts, screams, and roars. They also use body language, facial expressions, and gestures to convey different messages within their troop.

This past week it was World Giraffe Day. Here is one of my favourite shots of these gentle giants of the bush.

They always are so serene and relaxed, towering over the bush. Giraffes are the tallest land animals, with adult males standing up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) tall. Giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae as humans, but each vertebra is much larger.

I think it is time to get this show back on the road!

After a busy few months (OR NINE) and not finding the time to edit, finally, the creative side has returned to get my photos out to the world.

So let's start off with the take-off. This Egyptian goose in Pilanesberg Game Reserve gave me a perfect opportunity to get a shot I have always dreamed of.
