Trip with my students to the Overberg to see the dazzling Canola fields. A great exercise for photographers to practice design in their compositions, and their ability to 'see'.

Science and Magic. Those are the 2 parts of the recipe of a photograph. Of course, light makes the real magic happen. Early on a wintery morning, a lone seagull strikes a graphic silhouette on front of the magical rays that slip through a crack in the clouds.

The over-delivering winter rains wreaked havoc and destruction for many, but also created beauty for us photographers. These bare trees are standing in the flood waters in the low-lying area of Hout Bay, their reflections blurred through a long exposure in the low light levels.

Grace, elegance and beauty - these birds have it all! A very misty morning in the Cape provided the ideal conditions for this photo. Surprisingly skittish, this is as close as I could get, even with my 'Big Daddy' lens and trying to move slowly and carefully.
Thanks to Hannes from Meerlust to access your dam where thy were hanging out.

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, I enjoy 'product' photography a lot. It allows me to craft with my lights, and often the subject is quite challenging, due to the reflections shadows that can be quite tricky to control.
Here the subject is a very large motorcycle from BMW Motorrad at the Donford Group Stellenbosch dealership, where a workshop for my students and the BA students from the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography was held.
Lighting is with 2 AD300 Godox lights.

Light, tone and exposure. For beginner photographers these concepts are often confusing, since they influence one another, and can be controlled, in some cases through the intensity of the light, but always via the 3 exposure controls of the camera: aperture, shutter and ISO. Here is a perfect example where the whites of the plinths and the wall are rendered either perfectly white, in many variations (tones) of grey, and even black.

Last stand... these trees surrounded by the swirling winter clouds evoked a fantasy scene in my imagination, as if I was permitted to peer into Middle Earth, or a Game of Thrones winter landscape. Cold and somewhat foreboding, there is also an air of defiance to the photograph.
The B&W conversion makes it more so, to me.

Take one brave model who's not afraid of the cold, add some awesome rocks in a very remote location, carefully place a flash, and this is the result 😁.
A photo about 2 years in the making finally happened! For the technically minded, this is high ISO for the stars, a little bit of moon light, and a flash with an Octabox (very low power due to the high ISO).
Special thanks to for the bouldering and posing.

By it's very definition, photography is all about light. Mostly this is the elusive, 'good' light early in the morning, and late in the afternoon and even after the sun is long gone. There is the golden hour, that period of daytime shortly after sunrise or before sunset, that is revered by many. Then there is also the blue hour, much cooler, when the shadow of the earth can be seen creeping up into the sky.
However, often it's about the feeling that light makes you have... well, whenever. This photo of the shimmering sea, evoking an endless promise beyond the horizon, is a bright daylight photo. It couldn't really have been made at any other time. The sky is dark, as there was a front approaching.
Nikon D850, 70-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor zoom lens.

My wife the Mouse calls these 'fadeaways', as we have yet to find a proper word for the visual delight of the misty hill or mountain shapes as they recede from near to far. Even if we found the proper term, it's unlikely that we would adopt it!
Photographed on the way to work, near Stellenbosch.

Another seagull on another day, in a completely different place. The seagull is not sharp, it's wings are blurred through the motion that gives the bird flight. The exposure is certainly not 'spot on'.
And yet, the photo is just how it should be, to me at least. There is a sense of movement, of freedom and grace.
Sometimes you just need to throw the rulebook out the window!

Sitting at the breakwater, I marvelled at the seagull's insistence to alight in the same spot on the concrete blocks. It must have known I'm a photographer, as it picked the lighter area, which stands out from the darker surrounds.
Photographically this was like a red rag to a bull: different contrasts - of texture, brightness and subject - and an overall interesting scene.
