Carmine Bee-eaters really provide a burst of colour to the bush in Kruger. They can often be seen along the roads waiting for passing vehicles to disturb insects for them to catch.

The populations of Leopards have been greatly reduced as a result of habitat fragmentation, reduced prey base, and human-wildlife conflict. When individuals are in close proximity to human settlements, they may prey on livestock. Farmers/herders will often retaliate and kill the big cats in retribution or will attempt to exterminate them in order to prevent livestock killings.

However, there are organisations
working across Africa who liaise with these farming communities to institute preventative measures to protect livestock from predation. Once such initiative is to build bomas for communities living in close proximity to carnivores. These are predator-proof enclosures keep livestock safe from carnivores, which in turn helps prevent the killing of both livestock and leopards.

It's a hard life being a ‘roller’…

These dung beetles (Telecoprids) shape loose dung into perfectly spherical balls, which they roll backwards to a chosen spot which they then use for feeding or as “brood balls” to lay eggs.

Have you ever witnessed a ball of dung being rolled down the road?

The Black-backed Jackal can be found in southern Africa, from the Cape north to Zimbabwe. Versatile and resourceful, it is equally at home in the Drakensberg Mountains and the Namib Desert.

This resourcefulness is shown in the folklore of the indigenous Khoikhoi people of southwestern Africa. The folklore says that the black-backed jackal often travels in tandem with the lion, which it frequently outsmarts or betrays using its superior intelligence.

The White-headed Vulture with its surprisingly colourful face was once widespread across Africa, however, due to habitat destruction, poisoning and human-wildlife conflict their populations are now disappearing at an alarming rate. The IUCN has listed them as Critically Endangered meaning that they face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild!

Organisations across Africa are working hard to study their population dynamics including by placing radio transmitters on vultures to better understand their movement patterns related to where they travel and why.

If you’re on a safari you’ll often find yourself looking at trees and thinking ‘that looks perfect for a leopard’.

That’s because leopards are excellent climbers and they will often spend their days resting in the trees. Pound for pound they are the strongest climber of all the big cats, and genetically they are adapted for their climbing ability by having special muscle attachment points on their shoulder blades. This provides them with stronger climbing muscles, enabling them to sprint up the tallest of trees!

The elephant’s trunk isn’t just a nose…it’s a superpower 🐘

Made up of over 40,000 muscles…it can uproot trees, pick up a single blade of grass or comfort another elephant. From drinking and feeding to communication and connection, the trunk is at the heart of everything they do.

It’s World Puffin Day!

The Atlantic puffin may look like a cartoon character, but it’s built for survival. Able to dive up to 60m, beat its wings up to 400 times per minute underwater, and brave the open ocean for most of its life. They can take it all in their stride.

But here’s the reality…

Changing seas = fewer sand eels = harder breeding seasons.

These iconic seabirds are a powerful reminder of how closely wildlife is tied to ocean health.

Celebrate them today. Protect them for tomorrow!
